Running Shoes/ Watch Selection

Had my wisdom teeth removed a few hours ago and am trying to put my debilitated state to use in getting some running shoes ordered for INDOC and beyond- I haven't replaced my running shoes in eons, and currently use an old pair of free runs that I'm not wild about. Does anyone have any solid suggestions? I know this is pretty individual but would be nice to have a starting place to start looking.

Also, I figured I would just get a durable, digital watch such as a G-Shock but have been entertaining the idea of getting an apple watch since I have many looking for a graduation gift idea. Obviously, would get a cheaper watch for Indoc but I assume after Indoc having an apple watch is okay and useful for tracking runs and things of that nature?

Thanks!

Apple watch is a definite no as a Plebe. No watches during INDOC in order that they may maximize disorientation. Shoes are a personal thing depending a lot on the shape of your foot, width, instep, pronation or supination, and many other factors. I would get two pairs, break one in before INDOC, wear them to INDOC, and save the others a a replacement for parents weekend or fall break. I would also buy a couple pair of padded insoles. They will absolutely save your feet with all the standing and marching you will have to do on hot concrete in your low quarters.

At what point would apple watches be allowed? After recognition?

Shoes are important. Take care of your feet. My son bought these for Indoc. He got them at our local running store and put white laces in them. (2 pair as indicated above)

You can find more info about watches in the thread I started recently “Asking the experts”

Buy a cheap beater watch for the beginning of the year, as Plebe year goes on you'll get a hold of when you can buy an apple watch.
For shoes, buy a pair mainly white. Adidas is a reputable brand.

If you have wide feet, you might want to look into New Balance. We bought Adidas Boost for my son - something like the all white NMD_r1. Also, later bought him a pair of white Nike Metcon. Indoc is not just tough on the plebe candidates; it is also tough on their shoes and the first pair that you have may get torn up. Find shoes that you know fit you well and are comfortable. You should probably try to break them in a little bit before you go to Indoc also.

My son had a G-shock Mudman watch that was a Japanese-market model. That did help identify him during Indoc on the Kings Point Photography pages because he was the kid with the GIANT watch. He lost it at Thanksgiving though, and so we bought him a Garman Smartwatch for Christmas. You probably wouldn't be able to have a smart watch like a Garman or Apple watch during Indoc. Cheers and good luck!

A G-Shock Rangeman is perfect. Besides being ultra-durable, it connects to the atomic clock so that you have precise time all the time (deckies take note and more accurate than cell signal). It is also solar powered so you never have to worry about batteries dying. There is a GPS equipped model but that's 2x the price and not necessary IMHO. And once you put it on, never take it off. Get used to wearing a watch 24/7 so that at sea you are always prepared for disaster. I left mine (a late 1980s G-Shock) on for years til the band literally rotted off my wrist. Apple watch is pretty and gadgety, but it's no G-Shock.

Happy healing on your wisdom teeth removal!! Also HOKA is an outstanding running shoe. Go to a running store and they will be able to tell you what the best shoe is for your foot. Good luck.
