Hi All,

My official standardized test scores have officially popped into my USAFA portal! Hooray! While i'm glad it smoothly went through, i'm a little confused on the scoring part.

I took the SAT and expected it to be measured on the 1600 scale. But, on my portal, it seems to be on a ACT scale because the numbers are so low (in the 30's). Did they convert my SAT score to a ACT score on the 36 scale?

The SAT subtest scores are out of 40. For the math, you double the subtext score and multiply by 10 to get what you normally see (out of 800). For EBRW, you add the writing and reading together and multiply by 10.

USAFA is unique in that they superscore each of the 3 subjects instead of just the Math and EBRW.

Unless you received a 1600 on the SAT, why would you think an ACT converted score in the low 30's is "SO LOW". The MAXIMUM ACT score is 36. A 32 ACT is basically the same as a 1425 SAT. Did you score a 1600? Also, the 2 tests have some areas that aren't totally equivalent to each other. But the academy has to do it's best to compare apple to apples; and not apple to fuel injectors. Thus, why they convert scores.

The same goes for comparing the kid who was in the IB program and ALL of their classes were advanced classes; vs the kid who took normal classes and had SOME AP classes; vs the kid who had a 4.0gpa but didn't take ANY advanced classes; vs the kid who was home schooled; vs the kid who took normal classes but took additional classes at their community college; etc.

I read the 'so low' part as comparing 1-36 of ACT to 400-1600 of SAT they were expecting, not that it converted to a low percentile score.

When expecting to see scores in possible the 600's or 700's, and scores in the 30's appear, I can certainly see how that does in fact seem low. I think 99Gold addressed the question appropriately. I believe you took the OP's question out of context, especially after seeing 99Gold's response. Sometimes condescending responses like yours is what prevents useful dialog on forums like this. Although I have received a lot of helpful information on this forum, it makes me cringe every time I see responses that attack honest questions.

I apologize if I confused you, I meant that my score was low in the 30's because I was expecting it to be on the SAT scale which would have been on the 1600 scale.

99Gold has the correct answer. It is NOT a conversion to ACT score. Again, it has NOTHING to do with the ACT.
OP, if you look at your SAT score report, you will see a section on the first page called "Test Scores." There, you'll see three scores: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. Each is on a 10-40 scale. That's what the AFA looks at and what you are seeing in your portal.

This will answer your question!!
Go to your "My SAT" scores on the College Board website...there you will see a blue arrow to the test result you want to select. Click that, and then you'll see dark grey tabs above your score report...Click "Score Details". Then you will have to click the "+" next to "Test Scores". Now... you will see a scale from 0-40 for your Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. So difficult to get there! ... but this is exactly what the USAFA uses and super scores all your test sittings.

... don't understand this at all.

If this is my son, I'd advise him to call admissions.

There is no reason to call admissions. It's not confusing. All SAT scores are listed this way at USAFA and you can also find the scores listed the same way on the SAT itself.
