SAT Essay Score

You need SAT essay scores with 5's or above in the writing and reading and a 3 or above in the analysis. You SAT essays will only be looked at if you are a English risk, meaning that you have a D or F in an English class, you have bad SOE's, or your SAT scores fall below a certain threshold. If you above the risk level once, then you are good to go for West Point and will never have to take the essay with your SAT's again.

Just curious JK2009, can you share where you obtained this info? Thanks.

My DS while applying for the class of 2022 received an email from his regional admissions counselor that his SAT essay score put him at risk. He had emailed asking if he needed to retake the SAT just for the essay because he had a conflict with work. This was the reply he got.

"I can't tell you not to retake it. As of right now, you show a risk based on the essay. If you do not retake, you will need a review from the English department. At that time I would submit any essays from both the SAT and ACT that you have and they would make a decision. If they do not accept the risk, you would be disqualified. I could remove the SAT scores and use your ACT scores, but that would really take you out of the running. It has to be your decision."

He has never received a D or a F in any class. His SAT's were M-790, V-710. He had around a 32 I believe in the ACT, I can not recall what his essay score was but it was not strong, he has terrible handwriting, don't think that helped his situation. He retook the SAT's multiple times trying to improve his essay score. In the end the regional admissions counselor for USMA switched out his SAT scores to his ACT scores just because his essay score on the ACT did not put him at risk. He did this on January 9, 2018 and told my DS to trust him. DS received a call from our State Senator the next day congratulating him on his appointment. DS received appointments to USMA, USNA and USAFA for the class of 2022. He is now a member of the USNA class of 2022.

USMA takes the essay score seriously. Good luck!
