SAT Score

I just got my scores back after my 2nd SAT and I got 1250, 690 on the reading and writing portion and 560 on the math portion. Is this a good score?
I agree with Ronin08. USAFA being a STEM heavy school. Get your math score up as close to 700 as possible.

Also Rolling_Thunder, it may be the pace rather than the content that is giving you trouble so make sure that you try to replicate test conditions when practicing.

Also curious about a SAT score . . . DS got a 1410 (670 Reading/Writing and 740 Math). Overall, happy with the score, but we are trying to decide to put forth more effort to try to improve. Is that score good enough, or try for higher. Interested in NROTC primary, and AFROTC secondary. Thanks!

ROTC scholarships are at least as competitive as service academy appointments, if not more so, as well as the elite engineering schools (think Michigan / University of Illinois, Stanford). I would personally have my boy take it again, or try the ACT. Realistically, 1500/35 are really min scores for the elite civilian schools. For example, DS has appointments to three service academies, never a B in his life, national level awards, etc, etc and he was waitlisted at the University of Illinois college of engineering with 1500/35 SAT/ACT scores. It's crazy out there.

T-371P is right. If the service academy is where you want to go 1410 is enough especially with a math score of 740. Spend the rest of his effort on CFT and Leadership stuff. However if you want to go to the better schools with ROTC than you better have above 1500 SAT scores, assuming you are not a recruited athlete.

Take it again concentrating on the Reading/Writing section. Higher will also help for your Plan B and scholarship money for Plan B. You'll need higher for best academic merit money.

While a 1410 is a solid score, it is not sufficient to make a candidate sparkle.

DD1 had a 1430 on first attempt. There was never any doubt that she was going to sit for the test a second time. The 1550 from the second attempt went a long way in adding shine to her package.

Take the test again.

Lots of friends have kids who were perfect SAT/SAT and still cannot get into MIT or Stanford. The true Elite schools have plenty of qualified applicants, need something else also to get in it seems.

I'll put it in the ALO perspective (and of one that took the SAT/ACT a total of TWELVE (12) times in the hunt for an appointment).

This is a nice score...can you afford the time and money to do it again? If so, do it again. And again. And again...

Why?

Simple...the higher the better, the more impact it has. The goal here is to WIN. A retake doesn't hurt the application, it can only help or be neutral

So...keep after it.

But that's just a greedy ALOs opinion.

While that is a solid score, I would suggest taking it again. In a competitive district you most likely need higher than that score, unfortunately.
