Sending CFA scores to the Naval Academy

Hi so I have an LOA from West Point and went on their diversity outreach trip and did the CFA. I received passing scores and as I was applying to the Naval Academy my admissions representative wanted me to send my West Point CFA scores. The problem is that I have a Diversity Outreach officer who I like and I feel like if I ask him to send the CFA score he would be upset. Also I will need a waiver and don’t want to jeopardize getting one. The naval academy wants to offer me an LOA and the CFA results would help me get it. And I don’t have a teacher to administer it and my blue and gold officer is to busy.
Thank you

Just hang on and take a breath.

The SAs know and expect candidates may well apply to more than one SA, to various service ROTC programs, and colleges that have nothing to with the military. This is a big decision, and they want you to do the research to make the determination of where you see the best fit for yourself, not only at an SA, but in various officer specialties.

There is no reason a staff officer at USMA would be upset with you. They are professionals. You took the CFA, and if you politely and appreciatively request they send it to USNA (you will of course have figured out the “how” on that so you can tell the USMA person what to do), the task should be accomplished. It’s a simple administrative action with no particular import attached.

The waiver process will not likely involve the Diversity Outreach Officer. Your case will be evaluated on the facts presented and a decision made in accordance with policy and precedent. Again, these people are professionals. Do you truly think they’d be vengeful about a CFA sent to USNA? If so, why in the world would you want to go to USMA if you suspect that is their culture? Silly question on my part, yes, but stop to think about the leap your imagination is taking and the shade being cast.

This is undoubtedly not the first time the USNA Admissions officer has gotten a CFA executed at USMA. The various SA Admissions teams do not invest time in plotting how to keep candidates away from other SAs. They have hundreds of highly qualified candidates they do not offer appointments to each year, so if you choose one SA over the other, they will be happy you found your match.

You are in an enviable position, with the possibility of LOAs leading to offers of appointment. You can make your decision between the two when it is time. In the meantime, you’ve got a bird in the hand, no need to chase after another CFA. Just take the steps to share the results as a simple admin task. No secret red X’es will be stamped on your application.

Good advice from CAPT MJ. Your CFA Administrator received an official .pdf of your test scores. That individual could also send that file to your Navy B&G officer. I send CFA scores all the time to the other SA admissions field folks and the academies directly. You should also be able to enter your CFA Administrator into your USNA portal where they can load the scores directly. Lots of ways to get it to Navy. Do not worry about what one academy thinks compared to another one. We are processing so many candidates, we know top candidates will be competitive for many offers along with ROTC deals. The best admissions folks will want you to make the decision that is right for YOU!

FYI: When I interview candidates for USNA and they also have applied to other SA's ...it's considered a PLUS. Shows that the Candidate understands it's very difficult to get an appoint to ANY one of the SA's. It also shows he/she want's to be an Officer. I even have a Candidate (this year) that said his first choice is WP, this is also no problem, because he would still make an excellent Naval or USMC officer. Indeed the above posters are correct.

Today, I received an e mail from one of my Candidates...he was just appointed to WP, and will Accept this as it's his first choice. During the BGO interview we talked about WP being his first choice and USNA his second choice. I wrote a top recommendation/report for him non the less. He was a college re-applicant who went to MMI on his own dime-increased his SAT scores and proved he can handle Plebe year courses at a SA. Army's gain, Navy loss. But a brother in arms none the less!

The spirit of what BGO's and @CaptMJ remarked is so true. During our son's cycle, he was clear with everyone (BGO, FFR, ALO, Recruiter, NROTC panel, nom panels) what his first choice was. Along the way, each party was supportive. His army recruiter proctored his CFA and submitted it to all SA's applied to. His FFR reached out to congratulate him when he accepted USNA and turned down USMA. The USMMA parent club who did a great job advocating for USMMA did the same, a hearty congrats, and good luck to you sir.

It is clear when someone is genuine about a life/career of service. And I think anyone who is working as a BGO or FFR or ALO would want the best fit for the young man or woman making this decision. After all, except for a few football games, they are all on the same team.
