The results are now out for NROTC Navy Options. I suspect all Midshipmen know by now, so the real planning begins for next spring.

For our unit, there were 7 SWO, 5 Aviators, 2 Subs, 2 Nurse Corps, and 1 Spec War.

Hopefully folks most got their first choice. We only had 1 who received second choice, but being an aviator vice SEAL isn't so bad.

4 SNA, 4 SWO (1 Crypto option), 2 Subs, 1 unknown trying for specwar. I got SNA

Awesome. Exciting times!!

Why does NROTC find out so much sooner than USNA 🤔?

Organizing the service selection boards takes time and resources. And USNA has a LOT more people to sift through and they also have many more communities to select for. (Chaplains, Doctors, Lawyers, Public Affairs, FAO, etc)
That absolutely makes sense.

I would think that working with all the individual units would have its own challenges! Congrats to all. Exciting for parents, too, to see what their young adults will be doing 💯

I was curious about the unknown… what would drive that? Why don’t they know yet? When will they find.

More a curiosity as I have never seen that before.

Perhaps CO can confirm, but seems that across the board many people who wanted SNA/SNFO did not get it this year as compared to previous years. My old CO mentioned yesterday that this is due to the severe backlog at NAS Pensacola.

The backlog does not help, but my aviation numbers did not change all that much. What changed a little was the emphasis placed on the ASTB. Sometimes there are Mids who have a high GPA and hold a leadership position, but they scored below average on the ASTB. The aviation community managers have a say in who is joining their tribe and they want people who have the strongest chance of making it through flight training.

I cannot say why this would be the case but would assume it has to do with the fierce competition for severely limited spots and the rebellious nature of our SEAL brethren.

In that there was a greater or smaller emphasis?

To support the sage guidance above, from one large NROTC unit - here are a few data points and observations – consider or ignore as you wish:
  • candidates with strong ASTB scores generally received aviation opportunities (SNA, NFO)
  • roughly 85.x% of a large unit got their first choice
  • a couple who had SNA/ NFO on their pref sheets as 1, 2 got NFO -1370.
    • Yes, some who wanted aviation got something else entirely. One student with a near perfect GPA, leadership billet, and just a PT beast with weak ASTB scores who wanted SNA is now 1170 - on his way to a sub interview (got subs).
  • Yes, certainly fear existed in me and other parents/ candidates prior to the event that due to the Pensacola backlog, most this year could not be offered SNA or SNFO, Had that happened, it would have been awful for the commissioning class of 2023, even if there was some logic to it. However, that did not happen overall. My DS did have strong ASTB scores and service selected 1390 - SNA.
  • Honestly, there weren’t a lot of sad faces or drama at 3 of the school ceremonies I am aware of this year, which is reportedly measurably different than last year when “sub-drafted” was being vocalized the same way Jerry Seinfeld says “Newman!”. The one person in tears this year was a female sub draftee who wanted SWO-1160. However, details about the bonuses and higher pay for the submariners, like that whispering voice from field of dreams, “eased her pain”.
Congrats to all midshipmen as sub interviews, flight physicals and November Annapolis announcements finalize their first assignment paths.

I checked the acronym list, and a quick Google search, didn't find SNA/SNFO, help?
Interesting read, good thread. Excited for them!

Oh, sorry about that.
SNA - Student Naval Aviator, Pilot
NFO (Naval Flight Officer)

I'll probably get a lot of groans if I oversimplify with SNA = Pilot/ Maverick path. NFO - flight officer / Goose path.

Agh, the Student component through me off. Got it, thank you. DS wants to select pilot via USNA so I was familiar with the designators there, that 'S' through me. Thank you! And congrats to DD.

Thanks and best of luck to your son. Hopefully we’ll exchange the secret SAF hand signal/ a friendly nod and say hello / congrats at their future NIFE ceremony at PAS. 😀
