Service selection sheets turned in for c/o 24!!

If course we were also talking thanksgiving, army navy, and a sweet vacation during semester break. So it could have been that….😆😆

It is a great time of year!
I think it's all of the above! My Firstie is a little nervous, a lot happy, and just anxious to 'know'. This Mama is hopeful for dreams to come true, but confident that it will be the right path, no matter what it ends up being. Ours is coming home the day after assignments are handed out (for OpInfo Sessions), so hoping to have a celebration no matter what! Let the countdown begin (T-21) - what a long ride (and incredibly fast at the same time) it's been for '24!

I am beginning to think I'm more nervous than DS is. He said he's so busy he doesn't really have time to think about it. And then it randomly pops into his mind and he has a few nerves, then he's back to being busy again.
... accurate -->"he's so busy."
That's what we get after moving next to the yard.
Actually:
Homework-constant.
Laundry- this is more like carrier landings as the trunk is left open for him to dump laundry.
Homecooked meals- Massive cooking.

Less than a WEEK.

On Friday, next week, is the first morning they wake up as an XXX

I’ve been through this once already. It’s just as exciting second time around.

Good luck C/O 2024 🚢 😤💪⚓✈️🫧

Just to add to the suspense...

DD said this morning that if you are not going to receive your first choice next Thursday..... then you will receive an early morning phone call, before the company gathering, informing you of your status.

Not like the ol' days when you could watch the company service selections live streamed. Events in the Roman Colosseum might have been more humane.

For many of us, November 16 service assignment day sits just between receiving the Appointment Letter and going to Graduation. I-Day is an emotional day for Plebes and Parents alike. And it will always be as parents and sons and daughters learn to let go.

Service Assignment night is a roller coaster ride waiting to hear what our sons and daughters got for their career in the Navy. Some will cry with joy of relief and some will cry in disbelief. When the storm passes over, miraculously, we all know what to do next and take our places as parents and soon to be Ensigns/2LTs. No matter what, they will all serve with pride and honor. And prepare others to do the same.

DS told me tonight he received notice that if they aren’t to receive their first or second choice, they could choose to be told by phone the morning of service selection. He said they will know who would be making the call so prank calls won’t fly.

All out of his hands and it’s just a waiting game.

It is what it is.

I am guessing DS would opt in, just so he can get answers sooner regardless of good or bad news.

Very interesting. I feel like that would just add another hurdle to worry about. Just sitting there watching your phone while you hope it does not ring. That said, some company officers have called unlucky MIDN into their office to let them know of less than desirable results, but this was done a lot more quietly than getting a phone call.

On another note, my year had a Dant's Call the Thursday prior to SA Day. They provided the breakdown on choice selection (e.g. 80% got your 1st choice, 9% got your second choice, and 11% got third or lower). I don't know if that was the norm or if they did that for expectation management. My class ('20) had pretty high attrition over our four years, so the Dant said the SA team had to be pretty stingy with numbers (i.e. selecting just over the minimums) to ensure each community had enough candidates to pick from.

I would say another tortuous affair is registration for classes. Registration for next semester is done before SA results are announced, so multiple MIDN have to have the awkward conversation with their advisor about switching Practicum classes since you register for your first choice. Some get lucky and don't have to switch (Like Navy or Marine Air getting NFO or Marine Ground, respectively).

Since DD1 early selected, she didn't have any of the anxiety leading up to service assignment. While I was happy that she knew what she wanted and was able to secure it ahead of time, it always seemed like we were the only family not invited to the block party when the day finally rolled around.

Seems that could be remedied by just having the system auto register that class based on selection.

DS and company have heard rumors (of course unconfirmed) that there was a very high number of Navy and Marine pilot requests compared to the allocated slots. Lots of nerves abound.

Yeah, the rumors are rampant... Too many of these, not enough of those. DS did at least commit to attempt to send a text with the selection if he has time that day.

Mine reported the same rumor, with the addition that SWO interest was short.

DS reported that the Firsties town liberty for Thursday has been canceled. Historically night of SA was full of off yard libation consumption.

It may not be a bad thing, actually. This is the nerve wracking time for moms and dads.

Stay smart, Firsties!! Always have a sober wingman. Lots at stake, potentially.
