Should a 4 Year ROTC scholarship recipient take the ASVAB? More scholarship opportunities?

Help! My DS is a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship recipient and a 3Q candidate for USMA with a congressional nomination. Army, Navy and Air Force recruiters that visit his high school and his JROTC battalion keep telling him that he should take the ASVAB for more scholarship opportunities that can be used for Room and Board? Is this true? Does it exist? Is there a benefit to him taking the ASVAB? We've been having him stay clear of recruiters for years because he has always wanted to take the route of ROTC/SA, just wondering if we are missing out of something or unaware of other opportunities. Thank you in advance for any advice/insight!

The ASVAB is used by enlisted recruiters for job placement options when you enlist in one of the services. Basically tells them what jobs someone is qualified to take.

I cannot see how that would be valuable to getting a scholarship for other items??? Maybe I'm missing something here.

I agree. But maybe there are some scholarships that I have never heard of.

That's exactly what his father and I thought. Just wanted to make sure we weren't missing something...

(My assumption is that...) The recruiters are trying to get him to sign up for the reserves/national guard scholarships that are available to ROTC cadets, such as the Minuteman scholarship. If your son goes to a school where 4-year recipients get full room & board, then there is no benefit to these scholarships. No purpose at all in talking to recruiters when your son is going to commission, not enlist.

Even if he has to pay full room & board while on his 4-year, these scholarships require you to join a real Army unit, drill with them, attend basic and AIT, etc. As a current cadet on a 4-year, no value in my eyes.

Thank you so much for confirming what we thought. This board has been so much help to us for the past 3 years for my DD who is a current cadet on a 4-year and now my DS who is a current 4-year recipient. We learned so much through this forum just wanted to make sure we weren't missing anything especially since we were a non-military family before both kids decided that this was the route for them!

Yeah, those recruiters are not being fully truthful. ASVAB is only used for enlistments. Your son has a 4YR ROTC scholarship, steer clear of enlisted recruiters. They will try to talk your son into enlisting and trying for a MM scholarship, which means you will have to decline the 4YR ROTC scholarship. They will tell him how soldiers respect a previously enlisted officer more, blah, blah, blah. Nothing exceptional about being a private in the USAR or ARNG, and really most Soldiers don't care what you did in the past. What are you doing to take care of them now? Nothing to gain, and everything to lose if he starts talking to an enlisted recruiter. I only recommend talking to a recruiter for non-scholarship cadets who are interested in SMP.

Thank you very much for the honest truth!! Just shared with my son and they made the exact statements to him that you mentioned above "soldiers respect a previously enlisted officer" etc etc.. Like always this forum comes through with guidance!

Your DS can politely but firmly set a boundary and request they do not contact him further, as he is focused on a direct path to college and a commission with the AROTC scholarship as well as in a good position for a USMA appointment. A good adulting drill.

exactly the advice we shared with him last night! This is his journey and he needs to just set up some boundaries with them.
