Since technically we are still waiting and have not received TWE ? DS is trying to get a jump on things before his summer schedule gets crazy.

Can’t until you have portal access. Unless you are referring to touching base with teachers, etc. Personally I would hang tight until TWE, or even better, an appointment!!

I would think that it would be fine to fill out a preliminary application and then get on the list for the ECandidate Packet Letter (which gives him Candidate Information System access).

I was wait listed for NAPS, and just this evening tried to log onto the portal - but can't get past the initial security screen. I am inferring that since they sent out the new applications the username and/or password has changed.

Me too. No more access to my Candidate Information System.

There is (should be) no rush to open a new application. Several reasons. First, USNA won't review files of reapplicants until first semester college/prep school grades are in, which is typically late January. Second, you may change your mind (love your new school) and thus don't even need to make the effort. Third, most of the items will look a lot better if you wait until the fall --such as activities record (can add summer/college activities) and essay (you'll be a more mature person come November than now).

The above said, there are some things you can do now and over the summer. One is retake the CFA (you need a new one). Second, is to start the process with the MOCs, especially if they have early deadlines. Third, if you think you'll use your h.s. senior teachers for recommendations (vs. college profs), talk to them now and try to get them to write the recs while you're still fresh in their minds.

More important than starting a new application is finishing the semester strong! USNA will look at your 8th semester grades. Also, line up something productive to do this summer. Work. Volunteer. Learn a language. Take well-deserved vacation but also use the rest of the time wisely. And get excited about where you'll be starting school come August.

yes! we are checking all those boxes, just thought he could get the prelim stuff out of the way, sending scores and entering data, but you are right about even the personal data sheet as some of that will change over the next 6 months. at a minimum he should be able to get 8th semester grades sent in a few weeks once the HS year is over. but i think hes going to wait until he final decision is made from the academy, one way or the other.
