DD, 16 yo, will be traveling from LAX or SNA to EWR by herself or possibly with a friend (who is still waiting for SLE acceptance). United charge $150 each way for unaccompanied minor while Jet Blue doesn't, so we are likely to book her on the JetBlue flight which is scheduled for 6:22 arrival. Anyone going from LAX - EWR as well?

Also, DD was accepted for SLE within a couple days after submitting her application but her friend has been waiting for over a month now. Is it because her friend has not taken any SAT or ACT yet? DD said her friend also has good grades so we are thinking if it's due to no SAT/ACT score was entered. Has anyone gotten accepted for SLE without these scores?

On one of the admissions briefings for SLE I remember hearing they do want some sort of self-reported score. If the friend has a PSAT score that will work.

Not sure if her friend has taken PSAT, will let her know. Thank you! *Edit: Just found out her friend didn't take PSAT either.

Not everyone will be accepted to SLE. They try to pull from different areas of the country so scores might not even be a factor. My oldest got declined with a very good SAT score and 4.0 unweighted grades (he later got accepted into SLE from the waiting list but not until late April).

Did you want unaccompanied minor? We declined it on United to save the $300.

I did not know you can choose to decline UM, thought it was mandatory because we didn't see it as option. UM fee was automatically added to our booking at check out. I will look into it more closely because United's arrival time is better than Jetblue's arrival time. Thank you!

This is from United's website:

There is a checkbox on the booking page that you need to uncheck. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll ask husband to take a pic. We were getting very frustrating that we had to pay an extra $300 for a flight attendant to hold our DS's hand when he could legally drive to NY!

Does your kid need to be accompanied at 16? I don't think so.
Call United rather than working w/ the website.

UM is required up until age 15. My son has flown without it since. However if you feel your child still needs it after the age of 15, you can request it up until 17. You just have to fly direct. No layovers in another city.

It is unaccompanied minors that have to fly nonstop. 15-17yos that are not UMs do not have that restriction. We were able to book my ds on a flight with a layover.

thank you very much! we will look for that box and uncheck it!!

No, my DD doesn't need the UM service. We just didn't see the option box to uncheck it so we thought it was mandatory. Thank you all!

Remember that SLE (and SS at USNA and USAFA) is primarily an awareness-and-outreach program. Many attendees are so-called “water walkers” with amazing credentials. But many attendees come from under-represented groups, which could be geographical or racial or any other definition the SAs want to use.

So SLE is not a straight rack-and-stack acceptance process that’s based on just numbers or timing. There are other factors in play. The good news is, acceptance to SLE does not directly affect one’s chances of winning offer of appointment. Most incoming plebes did not attend SLE.

My DD went to session 2 SLE last summer and is headed to Beast this June. We are in LA on the west side. Feel free to DM me (or PM, whatever they call it here) if you like for any reason!

Yes, there was a checkbox to uncheck that I nearly missed. My son saw it!
