Something needs to be done about our vetting new cadets

it would be prohibitively expensive and time consuming to do psychological testing and detailed background checks on every person who enters the military, including the service academies. Fact of life that there are scumbags in every group of people though by and large the military has fewer than most in the civilian world. This of course is also symptomatic of an era when young people are not being raised with the same morals and discipline as in the past; its the liberal 'me generation' that doesn't say no and doesn't demand responsibility.

I don't agree that it is worse now than in the past or that some 'liberal' influence is a cause. I do agree 'that there are scumbags in every group of people by and large... '.

Even 30 years ago I testified against perverts and child abusers within my unit or command.

Maybe instead of investing in autonomous self-driving vehicles, we should instead working on PreCrime that doesn't come with Minority Reports... but I digress.

Oh this is absolutely the case. Many parents don't raise their children themselves, but the kids are raised by a person earning minimum wage at a daycare. So the children take on the values of a stranger. Just great. School shootings by kids, suicides, drug addiction through the roof. Opiate epidemic. Young people with no hope. Spot on.

So, those of us working mothers with very successful children are "bad parents"? The quality of time spent with your children is more important than the quantity. I'm not sure you really want to go down this path.

Agreed Capri..... Nothing good going to come out of this line of thought. Nothing to see here... keep moving.

Entitled to an opinion as I see it. 20+ years as LEO. Not trying to offend the working mothers who do a great job. If I stepped on some toes, I sincerely apologize.

MichUSNA2021hopefulparent - Oh no you did not just!

Hey look, I can see I really angered some people. Not my intention. I'm sorry.
While I understand your thought process, perhaps the way in which it was articulated was not the best. As a working mom/professional-I totally agree that there is a great deal of importance in WHO we choose as caregivers for our children. Just as previous posters have said about the 'bad' people in the service academies or any field, the same cane be said of daycare providers- some good, others mediocre and some suck. However, the quality of the care given to our children is important at an early age, and as I have always told my children- be careful who you associate with, as they may not share the same values. Give our children proper roots, but also the wings to fly.

Well stated, and I'm sorry I said anything to begin with.

I don't believe MichUSNA was speaking specifically to all working mothers, your statement is exactly right but not the case for every situation. It's just much more common these days that both parents work and kids are subject to outside care. That doesn't mean anyone is a bad parent or that kids will not grow to be successful, it's simply a by product of our economy these days. What it does mean is that those families with minimal income that work long hours sometimes don't have the time other parents have to spend that quality time. My wife and I both worked full time, our kids were in after school care and pre school care, we did however have the time as many of you to be involved with our kids and have that quality time, not every family has that opportunity and I believe that's what MichUSNA was referring to.

When my DS was at NASS last summer, a male was found in the middle of the night in two females room just watching them. Luckily midshipman in charge of patrolling the floor found him before anything happened. My son said that after that happened, the next morning there was an announcement saying that females were allowed to close their doors for the rest of NASS. Crazy! Wonder what kind of permanent record that went on! Luckily it happened before admittance to the academy.
