Sonic Boom/fighter jets scrambled

I didn’t hear the boom, but I was flying the pattern at an airport in the Annapolis area and heard the intercept on guard after 3-5 minutes of unresponsiveness from the plane. I landed back at my home airport and folks on the ground asked if I heard the “boom.” I didn’t, but it was quite an interesting experience to hear it over the radios and then on the news a few minutes later.

Notably this was a Cessna citation, which is a jet. It sounds like a medical emergency situation or a depressurization incident similar to the Payne Stewart crash.

Heard it, house shook. Neighbors poured out. DH opined sonic boom. I follow various local emergency state/local agencies on Twitter. Jet out of JB Andrews. Possibly a scramble exercise or actual. Never believe first reports. Figure there will be more.

On evening news now. Unresponsive pilot, Cessna jet, in capital area no fly zone, jet scramble from DC ANG at Andrews, plane crashed in Charlottesville area.

Reminds me of the days after 9/11. I was living in the Richmond, VA area and woke up late one night to the sound of a fighter (maybe 2) very high, moving very fast.

The news stories along the way have been hopeful, shocking, and tragic.

RIP.

I just heard a news report of it being a post graduation trip. Sooooo so sad.
