Wow! So many threads to read. It seems USNA may be behind on appointments. Can you accept plan B (NROTC scholarship) and back out if the USNA gives you an appointment? The scholarship states you have till the first day of school to decline but of course this isn't taking into consideration the school's deadline to back out. Will the USNA let you attend if you have already accepted another school? Thank you in advance!

Yes. Our son did that last year and his NROTC representative sent him congratulatory email.

The school itself is another matter. You may have to pay deposits to hold your spot. You may need to secure a dorm via deposit. Some of that may not be refundable.

Yes to both questions. My 2020 ensign sent emails both to ROTC and the university during plebe parent weekend and did receive congratulatory messages from both. We wanted to keep option B open just in case. We did loose the deposit because it was non refundable.

My DS didn't hear from USNA until June, so he/we sent a nonrefundable deposit to plan B. It is what it is....

Had you told the school or ROTC unit that you were still waiting on an academy or to get through summer training? Just trying to understand how different folks handle it. Thank you.

I think we forfeited deposits on some EA decisions. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. Once she got the Naval Academy offer, she accepted it immediately. The Academy is where she wanted to be. It happens. Just contact the other places and let them know. They will more than likely congratulate you on your appointment.

And keep in mind ... one hand doesn’t always need to know what the other hand is doing.

No, we had not. She received her appointment to the Academy in late November and her acceptance to her number 2 choice school and the ROTC scholarship about the same time. and the only place she wanted to go was the academy. We live in a very competitive area and most years about 2 or 3 students from her high school go to the Naval Academy and so we were advised by others and a retired Blue and Gold officer, that anything can happen between now and Iday (an injury) so you want to keep other options open. Regarding ROTC the Academy takes precedence over it, so once she told them that she was not attending the civilian college the ROTC scholarship was awarded for, the scholarship was nullified because the ROTC scholarships are not transferable. There are a few people who accept appointments and ROTC scholarships every year and then decide to not attend or leave in the first 2 year for many reasons without any financial repercussions. As long as you are not doing anything illegal, I agree with DR. Strange Love "That one hand doesn't always need to know what the other hand is doing." IF she was a reapplicant who had been attending a college on a ROTC scholarship, then it would her moral and professional obligation to withdraw from the ROTC scholarship before she would she start plebe summer but we would not have withdrawn from the college till the end of plebe summer, just to be sure.
