What do you all think about president Trumps new proposal for a Space Force? Do you think it'll go anywhere this time around? I'm an Air Force cadet so do you think I need to worry about getting sucked into this new branch if it materializes (I'm supposed to commission in two and a half year)?

A space force could be the best way to bring forward and use new technologies arising out of black projects. The President might get too much pushback to simply declassifying or disclosing much of that work, but less to moving it into the new branch, from where it could emerge in a seemingly natural way.

To answer the OP, whenever a portion of an organization spins off you have to worry about becoming part of it, or conversely, worry about being left behind, based on your point of view. That being said, I doubt you will bring any particular skills or, more importantly, experience, that a new Space Force will desperately want. Of course, you may have 100 space shuttle flight hours for all I know, so YMMV.

It seems funny to me that the original post comes from an Air Force Academy cadet given the Air Force's history.

"Recently, in an interview with CNN, astrophysicist and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson explained why he is ambivalent about the decision. "I've thought a lot about it, but I don't have a strong opinion," he said. "The idea of a space force is not fundamentally odd when you consider that the Army, 70 years ago, birthed the Air Force. There was the Army Air Force. "And once we realized that technology and war-fighting capabilities evolve [and were going to take place up] in the air space rather in the ground space, then it was sensible to suggest that perhaps this should be an entire branch of the military unto itself."

I’m not sure this (branch of military) is exactly Neil’s area, however much people seem to want to make him a pop culture icon.

I just want to know about the uniforms....

Dont watch Stephen Colbert, but I did see the clip when he made fun of Trump (when doesnt he) when he said that the idea is idiotic and by the way, we already have an organziation that deals with space and its called NASA. I would love if someone had mentioned on air that NASA has little to nothing to do with what the Air Force now does and what this Space Force would do. Mind you, i dont know if have a new branch would be a good idea. I just know that most of the those who call it ridiculous dont know what they are talking about.

NASA is also civilian. Can't weaponize space with John Q Public!

I haven't read enough to form an opinion, though on the outset it just seems like a high profile move by the President that is for the glamour than the efficiency. He apparently did not get this idea from his military advisors, so who did put the bug in his ear. If it's his own idea, well then it's not like he has a lot of military experience or knowledge to base his judgment on. Anyway, I did get a kick out of astronaut Mark Kelly's comment: "This is a dumb idea. The Air Force does this already. That is their job. What’s next, we move submarines to the 7th branch and call it the “under-the-sea force?"

Id endorse this idea as long as the service’s song would be the original recording of “under da sea” from Disney’s the Little Mermaid.

Oh how hearts would swell with pride, standing at attention when that tune is played.

Breaking news: The 7th branch of the service known as the "Under-the-sea" Force will move training to Disneyland
