Start checking NROTC portal!!

"We are sorry, you were not selected for a scholarship. You will receive a letter explaining other options available to you" just showed up on our portal. We are crushed.

Selection Status

We are sorry, you were not selected for a scholarship. You will receive a letter explaining other options available to you.

We expected this since my DS was not at all interested in the engineering field. He told me even if he was awarded NROTC he was sticking with AROTC since he can major in business. Best of luck to you all.

I understand your being crushed. I wouldn't say we were crushed when we got the negative news, DS and I expected it at that point and had plan B in place. But it definitely was a big disappointment to Dad. It just made DS MORE determined.

DS ended up at #1 school anyway and joined NROTC as a Marine Option college programmer. He hit a few snags freshman year and as a result did not submit a sideload scholarship application that year. This made him EVEN MORE determined to win a sideload scholarship, which he accomplished in December of his sophomore year when he was awarded a 2.5 year scholarship. For DS I would say it wasn't even about the money. Although he would prefer to cover college himself, he knew Mom and Dad would foot the bill if necessary. He was more determined to prove to them that he WAS a Marine and that they SHOULD give him a scholarship.

Point is, if this is truly what you want, continue to pursue the dream, either as a college programmer, or if you're interested in Marines look at the Platoon Leaders Course. In any case, there is OCS after college. There is more than one way to skin this cat.

You aren't alone. Portal just updated "We are sorry, you were not selected for a scholarship. You will receive a letter explaining other options available to you." Time to start looking into college program.

ProudOhioDad and all who got the bad news: sorry to hear the results but don't let this be the end. If you are interested in serving your country find a way. Kinnem points out there is more than one way to become a commissioned officer in the Navy.

These are all "high potential" young people. They are winners and if challenged find a way to succeed. Its time to look for alternative paths.

Just remember that in order to compete for a college programmer spot they will want to join the NROTC unit on their campus. They will need to plan their freshman course load with the appropriate classes. There are definitely folks on here who can provide guidance on next steps.

Thanks to all that offered encouragement. I went to school (MIZZOU '86) on an NROTC scholarship (Marine Option) and I know what DD needs to do. Purdue offered her a healthy academic scholarship and she loved the campus when we visited (great computer science program). She will join the unit on college program and we'll go from there. Once her instructors and CO get a dose of her, I am confident that she will be very competitive for a follow on scholarship. She is very motivated to lead sailors. I wish I knew more about the Navy's selection criteria this year.

Reading this forum and through other social media sites, I've learned many have heard a decision today. Is there anyone else who has not? I completed my package in January, and my portal updated to "No decision has been made on your application" under selection status on Monday. I'm very nervous I wasn't seen during the March Board.

Still says No Decision for us tonight as well... same as it has for a couple months. Stress levels just keep going up at our house.

I'm confident your application was reviewed. Others, who have not received a scholarship have had their portal updated to say so. I expect you're still in the running but I would also recommend having plan B ready to execute should you need it. I would expect you will know in the next week or so.

Sent you a PM.

No decision here, yet.

Thank you for answering. I do have a B plan, but I'm praying I don't have to use it. I know some applicants heard yesterday that they did receive a scholarship, so I guess the only thing I can do is to wait some more. Thanks again!

Does anyone happen to know the latest date we will find out? My application status still says no decision has been made. Right now, I'm trying to decide between a few different options, and it'd be really helpful just to have all the facts in front of me. thanks!

Two years ago DS did not receive a negative reply until April 15. With acceptance deadlines of May 1 and plan B ready to go it posed no problem. Let me introduce you to one of my life rules: Make no decision until you have to. I won't bother you with the corollaries at this point.

I would recommend gaming through the decision you would make if you do not get a scholarship. It gives you time to try it on for a few days and see if it fits. Plus, you'll be ready with your plan B when needed rather than still struggling with the decision should you receive a negative reply. But then, I'm sure you've already done all this.

EDIT: I would add that even if we had received our negative reply a week later it still would not have been a problem. One can always overnight their acceptance and deposit to the college of your choice. If you're working against deadlines other than May 1 YMMV.

Good luck!

For NROTC - in the spring of 2012, my DD received a positive update on her portal on APRIL 29 - 2 days before college deposits are due - which is also 2 days before they become non-refundable!

We did have plan B in place and because everything is online these days, we were able to request a refund of deposits not used.

So it can be a good thing to not hear until the very last minute!

Last NROTC Board

There is still one more board that will meet. Results should be announced around April 26 and most remaining applicants should hear one way or the other by then. There have been cases in the past where some decisions were not announced until after the May 1 national deposit deadline. Best of luck to all.

Can the website update on any day, or is it gonna be sometime close to when the boards meet?

For those who received a scholarship this year, what tier is your major? I am concerned that the last board may only award scholarships to tier one majors.

Mine was a tier one, got it about 3 weeks ago. I believe tier one can switch between 1 and 2 but not a tier 3 major.
