Hello,

Next year (my senior year) I plan on starting a few clubs. Specifically, STEM and Indoor Soccer/Futsal Club. Will these give me leadership points? How do the SAs view this?

Also, I'd appreciate any tips on how to start these up the best. Especially a club like STEM.
Thanks.

Well, it depends to be honest. If you can elaborate on why you started the club (i.e. There was a demonstrated interest in the student body and no club existed and you took the initiative to start it and put together the infrastructure, personnel, and resources), then it would look positive. However, if you start a club or two so you can throw Club President on your resume, this isn't USNA's first rodeo (been doing it since 1845) and they can smell that a mile away.

Agree with @Usnavy2019. Just the way you worded your question — “will this give me leadership points” — seems rather less than sincere. Plus, you may not make enough progress to make a difference in your application.

It’s one thing to say you’ll “start” a club. It’s another thing to actually create something that seems significant and sustainable. Not trying to discourage you, as starting something that you’re genuinely interested in is a good thing. But it has to result in something more than “style points” for a college application.

My youngest will attend an academic academy his junior and senior years at a local college. Since they have no athletics he has began inquiries as to how to start a wrestling club there. I can think of no better activity to prepare a man for the CFA or life than that sport/club

I’m going to have to disagree with you on this. My son runs varsity track and plays on the varsity men’s lacrosse team and none of that prepared him to throw a basketball on his knees. 😄 He works out on his own, lifts, does pull ups etc. every day to get ready for plebe summer should he have that opportunity. Team sports aren’t enough to get in shape for the CFA (or plebe summer).

(For a million other reasons, I’m absolutely a fan of team sports of course!)

Wrestling practice is a team sport….competitions are totally 💯 individual. As to the basketball throw, I will plea the 5th 🤣….but the other activities are greatly enhanced by wrestling/weight management

My son ran varsity cross country for four years and outside of basketball season woke up at 5:30 and did cross fit. Nearly maxed everything.
