I am still waiting to hear from the USNA and received a principal nomination Jan 17th and completed my application Sep 27th. I am medically qualified. I think apart of the long wait is my counslor sending the wrong 7th semester transcript. What are y'alls thoughts? I have been accepted to VMI and plan to attend VMI if things go south for the USNA and reapply for the class of 2023. This early in April should I start to put all my focus on VMI and reapplying to the USNA next year?

You don’t have a TWE so don’t give up hope. It’s practical to always think about all your options. Heck as a military officer planning is a huge part of your job, so it’s smart to. April 15th isn’t here yet. Also remember you could end up on the Wait List. If that is the case you could be in limbo even longer. USNA will ask if you want to remain on the wait list. You will then probably have to put a deposit on Plan B. All things to think about and plan for, but hope for the best along the way.

i would think they would re-request grades if that were the limiting issue

good luck

I had to resend my fall semester transcript. The board of admissions called me to request them and I had the grades sent that day.

Do y'all think that the principal nomination will keep me in the running? Do you think the delay in grades has anything to do with the wait?

What needs to be done in the next two weeks ? You will hear, one way or another, in the next few weeks. If something needs to be done for VMI, by all means do it...but there is nothing to even consider for "reapplying" to USNA next year before you hear this year.

Do you think the delay in grades has anything to do with the wait?
TE] Admissions typically doesn't ask for 7th Semester grades unless there is some question or concern about your Academic profile, so sure, the request for grades is relevant. However, if you have the principal nom, I would expect that USNA to give you a fair look, and wouldn't expect the delay in providing grades to be held against you.

You are in the running....until you are not.

Hang in there. Until you have that TWE you are still in the running. Just remember your school Principal is your PAL. Principle is first but there are not many of those from Congress since most have gone (I think) to unranked nominations.

I am a bit confused. If you have the Principal Nomination AND you are 3Q, I had thought the Appointment was automatic. Is that not the case or are the candidates that have Principal Nominations not triple qualified (3Q)? This may be a naive question.

Actually, the correct word regarding nominations is Principal Nomination. From the dictionary:

Principal can also be used as an adjective meaning “first or highest in rank, importance, or value,” as in The principal objective of this article is to teach you the difference between two words. A principle, on the other hand, is “rule of action or conduct” or “a fundamental doctrine or tenet.”

USNA is slightly different than USMA or USAFA regarding this. It has been discussed many times here. The wording in the USNA regulations gives a little leeway for not appointing a principal nominee. The other Academies have more specific language that the principal nominee MUST be appointed if qualified.

Stealth: I stand corrected and as a former English Major very embarrassed. You and Miriam Webster are very correct. Mea Culpa.

Then there is nothing to do but wait. An "envelope" WILL arrive.

No problem. We who were Econ Majors have to do something like watch out for English usage since most of us never got real jobs in the Econ field. :D

in our district, the candidate with the principle nomination was offered NAPS in 2016. Got appointment to USNA in 2017. Our district is pretty competitive with a large Navy presence and good schools, so not sure what went wrong.

Dear DCSH2018,

My DS had Principal Nom from Congressman, Nom from Senator, Top Candidate Award from summer seminar... and didn't get an appointment. We wish we knew what he came up short in or what the appointee from our district had that he didn't. Plan B worked out amazingly and had a lot to do with him getting an appointment this year. Makes getting into the United States Naval Academy on his second try even more special and makes us even more proud.
Best of luck to all still waiting!

USNA does its best to appoint a Principal Nom if a MOC uses that kind of Nom. Sometimes a Principal isn’t 3Q. USNA does have leeway in the Congressional code in this regard. If DS plans to reapply, it’s best to let it settle then give his Admissions Counselor a call on where he can improve.

Stealth: I once had a professor in my MBA program give me a little advice in the old days. Get a secretary or a dictionary. Now we have Spell Check but it still does not correct words spelled correctly but used incorrectly. I was Economics once (English and History also, long story but I beat Bluto in number of years to graduate) and know how it was with Econ. Thank God for the GI Bill.

Spell check doesn't cover everything. There was a "fad" years ago in the software industry known as "Guerrilla Programming". One of my colleagues did a presentation on it and at the top of every slide was "Gorilla Programming". I gently let her know after the presentation. :D
