Hi, can contracted rotc cadets can complete a travel abroad program for let’s say a semester or longer and not loose standing in the program? Is it even possible MS1-MS4?Because I’m doing ROTC but would still like the chance to travel abroad in college. Thanks 😊

I know it's possible to do it for a semester in NROTC by doubling up on Naval Science classes. I assume the same holds true for AROTC. It's possible there are restrictions on where you study abroad and it would certainly need approval.

That was the case several years ago in AROTC. They don't encourage it specifically, but they absolutely don't discourage it. The PMS (Professor of Military Science) at GA Tech told my son during an interview that one of his cadets was approved to study in St. Petersberg, Russia

The top concerns would be:

1) Is this "study" abroad as the thread title suggests or is it "travel" abroad as your post suggests?

2) Would the Cadet still be on track to earn a degree in four years? There are allowances for an extra semester or even an extra two in a narrow set of circumstances, usually related to purely academic reasons involved in a very rigorous STEM major. There would probably not be an allowance if the "Study" abroad is at the University of St. Tropez and your major is French.

There are a number of Summer opportunities available ranging from a "Travel and Leisure" experience to intensive language training. Some will earn college credits and others will not. Some would be your at your expense and some are sanctioned by and paid for by xROTC. My son did the latter. It was paid for by AROTC (including airfare and stipend), he earned college credits and it earned him OML points.

Best of Luck!

Study abroad was an important factor in deciding my DS's list of AROTC schools. It's totally possible, and some schools actually have essentially all their juniors (as an example) GONE during the first semester. Talk to the ROO/PMS at the school(s) to get their take on it. Approaches varied a lot, but some school embrace it.

+1 @cb7893
Agree that most Army ROTC programs will neither encourage or discourage study abroad. In fact, many may encourage a cadet to apply for CULP* where one can combine ROTC and time overseas working with another nation's military.

The key is that the Form 104-R needs to be approved by the cadre and should not extend the time needed to graduate if study abroad is included.

35 years ago at this time I was studying abroad my entire sophomore year on an AROTC scholarship. It was the best deal ever. Back then, all I had to do was some correspondence courses. Then when I came back as a junior they encouraged me to -- and I did -- join the battalion's Ranger team to help prepare for Advanced Camp.
