Stupid question

My son got an LOA to Naval Academy with a nomination. He got two nominations to Merchant Marines. However, he is disqualified for MM because he is color blind, and he is waiting and praying for a waiver for Naval.

We think he still has time to apply to USMA, and believe he can secure a nomination as well. It wouldn’t be too difficult to get the whole thing done next week.

Is it worth it, or should he just pray for Naval and look at plan c outside the military?

does he want to be an Army officer? If so what do you have to lose?

Have you considered ROTC perhaps to a SMC such as VMI or Citadel? There are also some ROTC scholarships 'thown out' around July 4th, #2 son didn't even apply to ROTC and was offered one out of the blue

The key question is whether an Army career is what he wants, and if there are branches he can see himself serving in for a minimum of five years. That deserves plenty of thought. If he can fully get onboard with Army as an alternate path, why not pursue it? If he can see himself going 100% either way, then he should leave it all on the field and go for it. If Army is not truly how he feels in his heart, then he lets it go and hopes for his USNA waiver.

Don’t forget if USNA says no this year, he can re-apply, execute a challenging Plebe-like schedule elsewhere, same situation will occur, but will show determination to earn his color waiver and go Navy in the communities available.

Never A Stupid Question!

Does he want to be in the Army? If the answer is yes, then apply.

He wants to serve his country. And he wants to give back for the successes he has achieved because of the opportunities he was given.

I suspect he picked Navy over Army originally because of geography. He is an upstate New York kid. Either he wants away from dad :/ or the weather.

I appreciate the replies.

He has started the ROTC path. He will earn his associate in math and science before he graduates high school ... so the other option is go work hard for his bachelor and get that before he turns 20.

Leaving the military option available ... or law or medical school.

He is fortunate with opportunities. His first option is serving our country.

I have got to think that since USNA gave your DS a LOA, he would be among the first group considered for a color deficiency waiver.
All is not lost until he is given a definitive answer.

There is a rather nice Senior Military College in the Holy City of Charleston SC ... just saying

The USMA admissions cycle doesn’t close until the end of February. With a little soul searching and editing of essays-and the support of his high school counselor, he could finish his application in a week or two.

I'm with Captain MJ. I'd complete the USMA application and see if you can get a nom (probably nom first), but Navy isn't off the table. He might need to serve as a Marine but it's still Navy and Marine bases are in warmer coastal climes for the most part.

Believe me, were he to go to USMA, it will seem like MANY mile separate you...

Upstate NY or not.

Best of luck!
