DS received his summer block assignments, just wonder how easy it is to switch from sailing to aviation? Thank you.

By aviation do you mean an aviation cruise? Or powered flight? What else is he assigned beside sailing?

Not very likely he’ll be able to make that switch. Mids have to do a fleet training and professional training each summer. There’s a few exceptions like mando summer school. Sailing is the professional training for what you listed, so if he wanted to switch out of sailing, he’d need to pick up a different professional training.

I thought the internship at a defense research facility serves as a professional training?

Generally, internships are not professional training. Professional trainings are usually academy run events. Osts, yps, nass, plebe summer, etc.

Additionally, getting 2 fleet cruises can be difficult. There’s only so many spaces and many midshipmen. Aviation cruises are hard to get. Despite the fact that a third of each class goes aviation, few have actually been on an aviation cruise.

Can't imagine that switching occurs very often...keep in mind, that individual interests and "wants" are only part of the equation. The needs of the navy, including required curriculum, availability, and budget, take precedence over the individual desire. A lot of staff time goes into designing the Summer training program, and I can't imagine USNA is receptive to special requests to accomodate any particular individuals desires.

There is a person in charge of summer training, your mid will know how to find out who s/he is. Your mid needs to go to their office (I think its the Summer Training office) and request the change. Sometimes they grant them, sometimes they don't. Your mid could even go there with another mid that has an aviation cruise that is willing to switch. My 2016 daughter had success changing a summer block this way. Nothing is guaranteed, but its worth a shot.
