My DD is currently a 4/C MIDN college programmer. She unfortunately did not receive a side load scholarship for this year. Since she can’t go to CORTRAMID this summer, she is looking for summer opportunities to continue training and keep her mind off of what she is missing. If anyone has any suggestions for summer activities/programs, please let me know! Thank you!

I was NROTC and many of us MIDN had internships over breaks. These include govt ones (Congress, defense contractors, DOD, etc) and private ones (Wall street, etc). The world is your oyster! It really helps to have being a cadet/MIDN on your college resume! Start applying now!

I’ll tell DD! Thank you so much!

Are you sure your Midn will not get a side load? They don't even have the board until summer. My CPer is trying for a interneship around home for this summer. Both private and govt. CORTRAMID is out for him too since he can't get his CAC and DODmerb complete before the last CORTRAMID if he gets the side load this summer.

I believe her unit was trying to get her a scholarship that would activate this semester (deferred 4-year or “on the spot”?). I’m not clear on the details; this is a new world to me. I just know that she was just informed it didn’t go through so her hopes for CORTRAMID are dashed. I imagine it’s hard to be the only 4C in the unit not going to CORTRAMID. She will need to pivot quickly for internships as suggested. And continuing to work for the 3 year side load. Thank you and good luck to your son also!

Aahhh..Yes the "On the Spot" scholarships were something new the NROTC did this year. Only certain units seemed to have been giving them out. She is still in the running for side load which is great. Not making CORTRAMID this summer is unfortunate, but they can always try for next summer. I'm trying to get DS to try something different this summer if he wants. They are in a interesting position in that they can do anything they want this summer as far as job. They are not limited to something to help them with there major or job after college(Navy is taking care of that), and they won't have training getting in the way either. Take some summer school classes online to get ahead. Try for a job that might be more interesting/fun then what they might consider over the summer.

Sky is the limit. Turn a negative into a positive is what I am suggesting.

Lots of great ideas! I’m sure it’s a tough position to be in but on the bright side she can do whatever she wants! DS #1 is a 2/C - earned a 3 year sideload after his first year. So never went to NSI and will only complete 2 summer trainings. He’s doing great (knocking on wood)! The journey can look different for each Mid. but the end result is the same! Hoping she finds something amazing for the Summer!

It’s so helpful to get this advice and encouragement. I agree; keep pushing forward and practice resilience. Thank you!

Based on our DS's experience if you don't win it after freshman year chances go way down. Is the scholarship financially necessary for your family? If not and DS is dead set on serving I would strongly encourage looking into Marine Corps PLC. No ROTC overhead is a huge plus and Marine Corps fitness standards exceed what DS was doing in NROTC as a CPer so he is in excellent shape.

Not necessarily true at all. It is true that less than 100% of applicants will get a scholarship after freshman year but the percentages can be high, depending on the needs of the Navy. DS got a sideload during the first semester of his sophomore year (MO). People in the know (@GWU PNS (emeritus) have opined here on the actual numbers awarded in the past.

💯- that hasn’t been our experience either. And, if I remember correctly the overall chances increase each year. The important note for the OP - they either have to be on scholarship or in Advanced Standing to remain in the unit for 2/C & 1/C years. The only year I remember that there was an issue was for 2/Cs trying to get a sideload in the summer of 2022. Unfortunately, one of my son’s friends was collateral damage that year. We call it the year the Navy lost track of how to count 🥺.

This year is also looking really good for side loads based on all of the reading and research I have seen. The fact they had "On the Spot" scholarships this semester seems to be more evidence to me that College Programmers have a great chance at side loads this year. Last year was also a good year for side loads from previous years. There is always a chance of no award, but if your CPer put in the work academically, physically, and with the unit. Chances are better this year for sure.

It's important to note that sideload scholarships for Navy options are handled by NSTC directly. MARINE options have a separate sideload application process and the results are reported back to NSTC. So the criteria are slightly different.

For Navy options, the most important criteria are GPA, Tier of Major, and PNS recommendation. If the PNS has you listed in the lower half of your class, it can be a challenge to overcome that.

For the Marine Options, there is no consideration for a Tier 1,2, or 3. But your PFT score needs to be up there or you are dead in the water.

For this upcoming spring sideload boards, the numbers are looking very good.

You got me mind questioning myself this morning with the above. Are the boards for side loads in the spring or summer? I've seen info that says board's are in July. Are the boards in spring, but no results until July? Am I going off bad info?

All the prep work happens in the spring. Then the sideloads are done once the current scholarship season closes out. Sorry for the confusion. The results won't come out until the summer.

Technically the NSI results do not weigh against the sideloads. But if we have no shows and drops for NSI, then we know we have a few more sideloads available.

And I keep talking in the present tense, but I have been put out to pasture (retired)

That is how I thought it went, but I just wanted to make sure. I wondered what happened with NSI drop scholarships. I know DS said there were a bunch of drops at his NSI(like 10 he knew about) It is kinda neat that they can potentially "recycle" them.

I know your out GWU PNS, but you are still a oil tanker full of knowledge :D Thanks for clearing up!
