Summer Seminar Importance

If a student is selected to attend NASS, does this automatically consider that individual to be an “official candidate” for USNA? Or, does the student need to still fill out a preliminary application to qualify as one? Also, if many claim that there is no influence at all, wouldn’t that be counterintuitive on USNA’s part?

Your NASS application serves as your preliminary application. If you are selected for NASS, your portal will open up to start full application right around the time you return from NASS.

I'm not saying you're wrong per se, but why do squad leaders make performance review notes (beyond just the CFA) about NASS attendees if that's not taken into consideration with Admissions...?

As someone noted above, the NASS squad leaders are learning to lead--and need to know how to performance appraisals. Also, I would expect that an extremely negative review (ie. Candidate came to NASS and was clearly not cut out for military service etc) would be noticed. I don't think that an extremely good review would have any significant influence since so many good candidates aren't given the opportunity to attend NASS.

NASS is first and foremost a marketing tool. Sure, its a great way to see USNA from the inside (somewhat) , and get your CFA done, and I am sure that many who have always dreamed of attending USNA attend..but at the end of the day, the objective is to promote awareness. If you don't get into NASS -- it is not a reflection in any way upon your competitiveness for Admission to USNA.
