I will be a rising junior next year, and I will be applying to summer stem. I had a question regarding the application. How strong does the Athletic Participation portion of the application play into who will be accepted into the program? I currently don't do any sports(not even club or intramural), but I will be starting track this spring in the next couple of months, and will be doing cross country next fall. I do weight lift with my dad three times a week though, and that is something I could add in my personal statement.
Also, will they be more likely to accept people who live in an underrepresented area? More specifically, would Minnesota be considered as more underrepresented?

No way to know how they consider sports in your app. Our son was told to mention his rural small school and lack of stem opportunities. He did seek out leadership roles and discussed them. Being in some form of athletics is important for your physical fitness and learning to be a team player. DS applied two times to stem and got in 2nd time. Did not get accepted to seminar and has a principal nom to usna. Work hard, keep slugging through and good luck to you in your endeavors.

My son is applying to Summer STEM as an upcoming Junior. He decided he really wants to attend the Academy after a visit there this summer but his grades have been average in the past. He is working hard to improve that but if his rank is not in the top 20% of his class, does he even stand a chance of getting accepted? Also, do they have students from every state represented at Summer STEM?

Like NASS,,, STEM is an awareness program. I would presume they want to get people from around the Country and a variety of backgrounds/qualifications. The only person that doesn't have a chance to attend is the person that doesn't apply. In other words ... don't waste your time worrying about it, just apply !

Our DD was accepted last year as an incoming Freshman. I cant recall if every state was represented, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. The parents we met were from AL, CA, TX, WI, IA, NY, WA, MI, IL
