Summer training?

My son was awarded the 4-year Army ROTC scholarship last week and is awaiting the decision on the NROTC scholarship. We are trying to plan our family beach trip. Will there be any summer training that could conflict if we booked a beach house June 8-22? Or is that generally held later in the summer?

... call the Army ROTC Professor of Military Science (PMS) or Assistant PMS.

The saying here is “Semper Gumby.” Always flexible. Military life does not lend itself well to firm and fixed plans. Always expect that if something can change, it may very well change. While DD was at USNA, almost every summer training cycle on her schedule changed — a couple just days before the start.

Is your son a current high school senior? There is generally no AROTC training over the summer before MS1 year but his school of choice may have an orientation or similar.

Good to know! Yes, current high school senior graduating in May 2024. Do you know when orientations would generally be? July, etc.?

it really depends on the school and the battalion. I would reach out to the ROTC Battalion and ask this question. The summer before my daughters freshman year she went up a week early before the rest of the students and did a cadet orientation for Army ROTC. (this was August.) but again I think it’s different for every school.

NROTC does have 2.5 week summer program called NSI. It is mandatory for 4 year scholarship winners to attend to activate the scholarship. There are three sessions that the college NROTC units choose from. The first starts in early June, and the last starts towards the end of July. Some of the colleges prefer all applicants go to one specific session. Some don't. They will work with the applicant to provide 1st and 2nd choice, but its "needs of the Navy" for when they go. Vacations are not a viable excuse to change sessions.

The website that shows the NSI info when it becomes available: https://www.netc.navy.mil/commands/naval-service-training-command/nrotc/Program-Info/

If NROTC is a strong possibility, then be careful of planning too far in advance, or prepare for the possibility of DS not being there. As mentioned before. Start to preparing to be very flexible when it comes to planning anything with someone in the military.

This is very helpful - thanks! I did end up booking a beach house for 6/1-6/15, but I can cancel 60 days ahead without penalty...so that should work!

Yes, your son will need to attend NSI next summer if he goes Navy. And you won't know for awhile which one he'll be assigned to.

My son is going to attend Virginia Military Institute and they also have a Summer Transition Program that starts in early July and runs through the entire month. Then he matriculates in mid August. So pretty much, our entire summer is a wash.

I'm hoping he's even going to be able to go to his high school graduation, and I'm not really sure that he will.

When does he graduate? You can't go to NSI until you graduate, so the Navy will not schedule him until that happens.

So I actually have more questions now, lol.

He graduates in late June. The 21st I think. But it looks like the NSI classes are going to overlap VMIs Summer Transition Program. If the first NSI is that early in June, there's no way he can attend that one. So does he just miss STP, then?

That kind of sucks.

VMI being a SMC , I'm sure it works out how to get both NSI and STP done at the same time. NSI is like 3-4 years old. Schools graduating late in June is not that rare (my sons graduated at that time last year). I have no doubt they have something planned to make it work. Both sessions are important for the development of each of the programs, so it can be done.

If he is awarded a NROTC scholarship, then that could be a question to ask the school about STP and NSI scheduling.

In the first few years of NSI, the SMC programs did not attend. They considered the SMC orientation/transition program was considered sufficient. I'm not certain how it works now. I expect a call to VMI will resolve the issue for you.

To my knowledge SMCs now have to attend, I think if they are on scholarship. At least at Virginia Tech we had multiple incoming freshmen in my company who had been to NSI prior to arriving for New Cadet Week. Not sure if that is the same at all SMCs but our scholarship freshmen and even some upperclassmen (usually rising sophomores) who had picked up a scholarship were sent to NSI.

I know for sure there were some SMC's at NSI last year. I remember TAMU and VT for sure because TAMU had a specific NSI session they had to do, and there were a bunch of VT CoC Midn in NSI 2.

Well... It will all be interesting to see how it shakes out.

VMI's Summer Transition Program is optional, but my son really wants to attend and tbh, I think it's best for him to attend and start forming those bonds with his brother RATS. I feel like he'll be at a disadvantage if he doesn't attend that.

But I also think it's important to attend the NSI as well. Maybe less so, since he's been in CAP since his 12th birthday and is well-versed in protocols.

He hasn't been accepted to VMI yet, but should be hearing soon. So we'll find out soon enough.

Sounds good, but just remember with NROTC. No NSI means no scholarship now. Except under some pretty unique cases probably. If STP is optional, then NSI would be priority over STP. Especially since he can't do NSI 1. Not trying to be the bearer of bad news. Just providing info to all to manage expectations and to help make decisions.

He will absolutely attend NSI if it's mandatory. I'm really hoping VMI has a plan in place to accommodate their NROTC students.

My DS is currently Class 24+3 in the ratline, he is also on a NROTC -Marine option scholarship. NSI is mandatory, select 1 of the 3. He choose no STP, reading the reviews later glad we did. Yes, the familiarize themselves with the post, it is nothing like the ratline. With my DS he ‘bonded’ with his Navy / Marine ROTC brothers … (since he was on the USNA waitlist he selected NSI#3) had a few weeks off then matriculated. IMHO #RaVaMil
