Hello! I am a plebe at the Naval Academy who just received summer trainings a week ago and I have found myself in a bit of a pickle. I signed up for Summer Seminar as a safety blanket while applying to PTE's not fully understanding what mission critical meant. Mission critical means that if you sign up for it and get accepted into it, you have to do it, unless you can find a way to fill in the spots that open up when someone does not want to do it (or a direct trade).

The situation that I am finding myself in is that I got accepted into a PTE that I will never have the chance to do again as it is very competitive and only offered to plebes. I also got summer seminar, and since it is mission critical, I am stuck trying to find someone who can help me fill this spot and someone who can fill my replacement's old spot and so on. I think its more common to find parents on the forums than midshipman, so if you are a parent with a plebe that is upset because they did not get summer seminar, I am in need and asking of your help.

I will follow up with more empty posts so I could receive direct messages. Thank you for your help

Summer seminar is pretty desirable. I would think networking (mass email?) would work?

What is PTE?

A PTE is a professional training evolution! It crossed my mind to send a mass email but unprofessional emails from a single individual are not allowed. Thank you for your input

I suggest you start with your CoC, as in your 3/C. Or your squad leader. This is why you have a chain of command. They are much more familiar with the "rules" (for example, can you simply "trade" your NASS slot, or do mids have to be selected for this position) and the options available to you.

Chain of command exists to help and guide, not just enforce mandates.

Still don't understand that the Academy would double book an individual and force them to make a choice. I've never heard of that.

As mentioned ^^^, talk with your chain of command to see what can be done to clear things up.

And remember, your training plans need to be be flexible. Semper Gumby.

First step ask 3/C. We can help and most of us had this issue as well. Next step get a plan and present to your CO. Congrats on your PTE too, would you consider giving up leave too if you can’t get rid of it? As I remember, it was very difficult to get out of SS. However I heard some people did for certain PTEs
