Hello everyone,

I was wondering a couple of things:

First, are sunglasses allowed for incoming cadets during beast?

Are Cadets allowed to wear sunglasses during the Academic Year if they are AR-670-1 Compliant?

Is there anyone with experience on this that could recommend a pair or two?

Maverick didn’t attend USMA or serve in the Army, so not sure he’s the best authority on this. (Word is that young Pete Mitchell considered It, but the family connection ultimately pulled him to USNA and the Navy. He wanted to follow his father’s footsteps.) Besides that, he was a notorious rule-bender, so not sure I’d follow his example. 😉

No, don’t expect sunglasses during CBT. If you’re lucky and we’ll behaved with nice cadre, you might be allowed to wear your shaded eye-pro but you’ll probably just wear the clear the entire time.

During the school year, you can if they obey 670-1 minus formations.

Sadly, the wardrobe folk didn't get Mav a set of actual issue type aviators. Lens shape is not correct and it appears the the temple pieces are "hooks" instead of the issue bayonet temples.

I'm a "shoe" and even I know better!

Although they are ”inspired” by the military and there is nothing like them on the market today, don’t wear these.

I do love this guy’s conviction about his various “tactical” gear.

Pete Mitchell didn't go to USNA.

I stand corrected. Looking back, I believe the only mention of USNA is when Goose introduces Iceman to Maverick, saying the two of them attended the academy together. So question is, did Maverick go NROTC or OCS? Inquiring minds want to know.

No, when they did the flyby at Miramar, goose says something to the effect of I know it’s hard on you man, they wouldn’t let you in the Academy because your Duke Mitchell’s kid, but it’s like you’re flying with a ghost every time we go up. I got a family to take care of...

nobody wore the issued sunglasses, they were junk
Maybe you ticked off the flight docs @A6E Dad and they gave you some Chinese knock-offs.

I still have several pairs of my Navy-issue Randolph Engineering (made in USA / cool website) glasses and sunglasses from my flying days. They are outstanding quality. Only downside is the glasses with straight bayonet temples don’t stay on well unless you are wearing a helmet.

you're right, junk was the wrong word. these are high quality glasses, not polarized though. at least in my time, there weren't very popular among active aviators.

i still have my original mil spec HGU/4P glasses from American Optical (later became Randolph Engineering - based in nearby Randolph, MA). iconic design going back to the '50s i think, used by Navy, AF and NASA.

Wow, you have your originals? Man. I think the only original thing I have is my flight helmet bag.
I didn't realize that was Randolph's heritage. I use their nonpolarized progressive reader sunglasses for flying. Polarized tends to wash out the screen.

i think the only reason i still have them is that they were thrown in a box and never used. all the pairs of raybans etc that i used over years are long gone

yeah, polarized glasses aren't great for flying, but we never wore glasses while flying anyway. they were strictly used for looking cool on the ground :)
