"Sunni insurgents, resilient despite the five-week security crackdown in the capital, killed at least six more U.S. troops over the weekend. A Sunni car bomber hit a largely Shiite district in the capital Sunday, killing at least eight people."

"The issue that we're all trying to figure out is how best do you get the Iraqis to reconcile their differences — because after all, this is not going to be solved by the military. It has to involve political reconciliation in Iraq, among Iraqis," Gates said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

What are we supposed  to do?

Can you elaborate on your plan? "Who" do you want to nuke? Do you plan to carpet bomb the whole state of Iraq and all its populace? Or what?
Or you want to 'nuke' a terrorist cell? But that begs the question of if we know where the terrorist cells where we would have already attacked them with conventional weapons?
I for one want to hear the details of this.

Go watch the movie "Aliens". Then you might appreciate where I'm coming from.

Some people.

Not likely.

Since I don't see the relevance of galactic films involving martians to the Iraq situation could you just explain the Zaphod solution of nuking in more detail. My previous questions stand.

Sigh..... Some people have no sense of humor.

General Petraeus is optimistic: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6463529.stm

And so are the Iraqis: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1530762.ece

The other day I saw a story that the death rate of U.S. troops was the lowest in over 2 years or so since the surge began.

So it seems to me everything is working better than before except, of course, the usual naysayers.

So what's YOUR solution to the problem?

ETA: BTW, "Aliens" had nothing to do with martians.

Random thought: LARGE quantities of hostess cakes. Twinkees, Ding Dongs, Ho-Ho's, cup cakes, the kind with the white swirlie frosting thingee on top.

I just felt a little Twilight zone-ish for a second.

No worries if no one "gets it". Truly. I was just having random thoughts.

what? None of those yummy pink coconut encrusted chocolate cakes? You know, the snowballs - (is that what they were called?) Do they even exist anymore?

I guess I don't find 3,200 American troop deaths and hundreds of thousands Iraqi civilian deaths funny.

Isn't Gates his boss? Gates says there is no military solution. Also, Petraeus said he will not draw conclusions from the surge. It's only been a few weeks. But Bush and Cheney look a bit silly now with their "Mission Accomplished" banners and the "Insurgency is in the Last Throes" quote about, UH, 18 months ago.

Zaphod said:

Well, that's a selective poll. I've seen other polls that indicate 80 percent of Iraqis believe killing American troops are acceptable.
Side question, I am sure your military training and understanding of warfare at whatever academy you attended was of the highest quality. Did they ever teach you about home-grown insurgencies? Those need popular support, so the mere existence of such a resilient insurgency indicates the mood of Iraqis.

I am not sure about that. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. You've been good so far on posting articles to reference your beliefs, better than so many that think the war is a 'success'. So post an article for this.

What's your before and after that you are measuring things by, the surge , pre-post Saddam?

At least you've backed off nuking. There's many ideas on what will work, but we definitely know what will not work. This is the third or fourth surge on my count so obviously this goes under the do not work column.

Taking it a little personal now are we? Its simple, we give islamic fundamentalist terrorists their own state, then nuke it. This way there is no loss of innocent life :-P

It's his favorite hobby. We've been down this road before. SEVERAL times.

I'm not going to feed the troll this time, though. I have better things to waste my time on. But don't take my word for it; let's play a game...

I'll give you three guesses as to what school he is posting from. Go on, this should be easy... :yllol:

At least this time he pretended to be a candidate for a few posts, first. :yllol:

Texas is easier to spell.

He didn't try too hard at being a candidate. Would not answer any of my or JAM's questions. It is a pity that we have to waste our time on crap such as this.

Now I feel bad about jumping on WP.:frown:

No way, Jamzmom, Tastykakes are wwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better! Jelly Krimpets - YUM - I guess you have to be from the Philly Area to imbibe in such delectable treats!

Texas is easier to spell.
HaHa! I wonder where he is going to be from next? Maybe Utah? Nah that "h" at the end will "confuse" him!

Now I feel bad about jumping on WP.:frown:
Whistle Pig - did you read this? You may want to print it out and make it suitable for framing - haha

I do, however, wish the ladies would shut the hell up about Twinkies and such. I'm doing Atkins in the part of the country that has more Dunkin Donuts than it does people. Do you have ANY idea how difficult that is? Then I come to SAF and I see Twinkies, Ho-Ho's, Tastykakes, etc., being tossed around, and all I can think of is cinnamon crumb cake, cheesecake, French bread with butter, ice cream, and....

Darn it! See what I mean? :unhappy:

It's far easier to talk about nuking the Middle East flat and having a campout by the glow on the horizon. :shake:

Oh, well! Off to have my everything-but-the-kitchen-sink omelette! :bounce:

Chip, you're kinda funny in a sick sorta way. How 'bout a Zinger? I'll send you one over. I like Zingers. Are those Tastykakes?

Sorry. Guess we'd better stay on topic? :yllol:

Z! Atkins makes a banana nut muffin mix thats close to ok. You should give it a go.

BROWNIES! Some heartless bastard brought in BROWNIES!

:bang:

Stay on topic? THIS topic?

Nah..... Talking about sweets is more fun, AND more productive... :thumb:

Speaking of Tastykakes….my husband’s favorite is the butterscotch krimpets. West coast doesn’t get Tastykakes so every time we go visit the in-laws in PA we bring some back in our suitcase. A few years back we were flying out of BWI and security asked us to open our small suitcase, it was packed with Tastykakes. The TSA guy didn’t say a word but I wonder what he was thinking!

We don’t need to stay on topic, this is the “off topic” forum!!!
