What does a teacher evaluation consist of, is it simply checking off boxes or do they ask for a full letter of recommendation. I ask this because I took honors chemistry last year and my teacher said she would only write recommendations for her AP students. I'm in AP physics this year but I have only had the teacher for about a month and I don't think he knows me well enough to give me a proper evaluation. If I knew what an 'evaluation' consisted of, and explained my situation to my chemistry teacher, I feel that she would be more understanding of my situation, however I have no idea what will be asked of her. Does anyone know more about the teacher evaluations?

The SOE consists of 12 questions which the teacher will answer on a scale of 1 to 5.
The teacher is then asked to remark on their opinion about how you would perform in that subject at the college level.

Explain to your Chem teacher that it really shouldn't take long to fill out and submit. It is sent electronically. They fill it out and hit 'send'. Done.
It is not a full letter of recommendation. It is an evaluation not a recommendation.

Keep in mind that the SOE is part of the Leadership portion of your WP evaluation.
WP evaluates you academically by your high school class rank and your standardized test scores.

Sorry, do you know how much of a percentage the SOEs are in the Leadership portion of the Whole Candidate Score? I'm highly worried about my leadership area, because while I have decent extra curriculars, they might be not up to par with West Point's standards. Thanks so much!

This is the breakdown of the WCS (Whole Candidate Score):

Academics 60%
- 1/2 High School class rank (30% OF WCS)
- 1/2 ACT/SAT scores (30% of WCS)

Leadership Potential 30%
- 1/3 SOEs (10% of WCS)
- 1/3 Athletics (10% of WCS)
- 1/3 ECs (10% of WCS)

CFA 10%

That's more info than you asked for, but to answer your question, the SOEs are 10% of your WCS.

WP is looking for leadership POTENTIAL. The questions on the SOE are geared towards that which is why it is part of the Leadership evaluation and not the Academic evaluation.

What are your ECs?

4 yrs of 3 In-school bands
4 yrs of a school poetry and art magazine, 3 of those in leadership positions
3 yrs Venture Crew
2 yrs Mixed Martial Arts
3 yrs rowing
2 yrs Cross Country
Several mission trips with my youth group

My academics is much stronger (2170 SAT score, top 5% of a highly competitive school, 10 AP Classes, the rest honors), so extra credits and leadership potential is what I am concerned about.

Thanks so much for your info! I love reading your posts across the site; they are fantastically informative and very helpful.
