Hello, I am currently in High School and am thinking about applying to any or all of the academies. I have a slight overbite and the orthodontist's plan is to remove 4 regular permanent teeth, 2 baby teeth, and my 4 wisdom teeth. After leaving I quickly reviewed the medical requirements. They said that "missing" more that 8 teeth will be disqualifying. My question is will the wisdom and baby teeth count towards the number of "missing" teeth? If they do, would I be able to get a waiver, because the whole point of the operation is to give my teeth more space and eventually make them better/look better, and I hear it is only disqualifying because it will "impede the ability to adequately chew food"? (which I should have no problem with)

Baby teeth don't count as you'll lose them anyway.

Thanks, Do you know about Wisdom Teeth?

I was worrying about this same issue! To quote the DoD Instruction "All orthodontic treatment will be completed before beginning active duty.
h. The presence of wisdom teeth (third molars), if currently symptomatic."

I believe as long as the dental operations are finished prior to I/R day. I dont believe that the 8 tooth "rule" applies as long as your treatment is finished prior to basic. Everyone I have talked too has said the same thing.

DoD Instruction 6130.03 Volume 1, "Medical Standards for Military Service: Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction,"

Thank you very much for the info! So to be clear, wisdom teeth will not count as "missing teeth"?
