I've been accepted into The Citadel and recieved a 4-year Army ROTC Scholarship with some additional scholarships on the side.
I've been looking around on the internet for as much information as I can find about the school and I've come across some interesting opinions. From what I've read, there seems to be a negative opinion on the path The Citadel is headed. Many say that the school is getting "weaker" but others say that the 4th class system hasn't changed much. What are y'alls opinions on this? I've wanted to attend a military college since my freshman year in HS. The reason I've chosen the Citadel is the new Nursing Program.

Everyone who has ever graduated from anything says "back in my day it was a lot tougher", and it's true to a certain extent.
Life in general is easier, now. People in general, are a little softer because of it.

I mean really, back in my day we walked uphill to school in knee-deep snow with just rags on our feet. ;)

Citadel got tougher by adding the nursing program. I once worked for a nurse who had a black belt in nursing. uuuggghhh, rough woman.

Congratulations on receiving the 4 year ROTC Scholarship and your acceptance to The Citadel. Please try not to read "internet" garbage and ask questions of college officials. The Citadel is not getting easier - it has become more professional and more demanding - with the Four Year Leader Development Program - more physical training and more actual leader development, and less indiscriminate hazing.

Someone above mentioned The Citadel Nursing program is just for Evening School transfers - this is not true. The several military services and State of SC, encouraged The Citadel to begin the program as rapidly as possible - so starting the program with Evening School college transfers who could graduate early was the best way to earn accredation - which requires a graduating class and is necessary for ROTC scholarships. The Cadet program is limited to a small number of cadets with outstanding academic credentials who pursue the 4 nursing degree.

From the college web site:
"A traditional four-year baccalaureate program is available to students in the Corps of Cadets as well as Veteran students. An evening completion program is offered for community students who have earned the required general education and prerequisite courses at another institution and wish to complete their nursing degree at The Citadel. Classes and clinical experiences for evening students are completed during evening hours and occasionally during the day and on Saturdays, and are designed for the student who needs flexibility in their learning environment. Both the Corps of Cadets and evening students earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree upon completion of the program."

Yes, since 1842 the Corps of Cadets has changed quite a bit.

As a Citadel grad and someone who is active in the alumni community; disregard what you are hearing. The Citadel is not the same school as it was when I attended just as every college in the USA is not the same.

If you have an US Army contract at The Citadel you will be over prepared for a career in the US Army compared to your peers from other schools.

Congrats!

Well my bad there, somebody above. I didn't read enough apparently.

My son just completed his 4th class system, Recognition day and The Gauntlet are very will done and guaranteed to kick your ass.

Most of the changes are for the better, the only somewhat negative change is one where after your knob year all sophomore cadet will be scrambled into new companies.

Rest assured the 4th class system is plenty challenging.

The Citadel can be a life changing experience, if you let it.

Congrats, the nursing school is a great program and you will be well challenged by it.

"Back in the Old Corps- when the barracks were wood, the latrines were trenches that we straddled, and the men were stone, and we used bayonets and baseball bats on the Rats. Things were hard back then I tell you! Now it's all room service and massages- the Corps has just gone to heck!!":yikes: Seriously- some things are easier and others are a lot harder. I darn sure wouldn't have gotten accepted to even get started if I were applying to VMI today and we did lots of stuff 40 years ago that was hard but stupid. I think that VMI (and my guess The Citadel) - are a lot more focused on being productively challenging, and if you can get a nursing degree - that is both academically challenging, and a good profession to be entering. Good luck!

NOT official video but Citadel can be as demanding as you care to make it.

Are you complaining?

The thing is that people who are happy with something using dont go around posting how good something is and honestly if they did most people wouldnt take it too seriously. On the other hand, most people who do post are usually unhappy about something and people tend to believe when someone is being negative about something. If you had 500 happy who were happy about the Citadel and 50 people who were unhappy about it, you would probably see 40 negative reviews and 15 positive reviews. Based on the reviews it would seem like there was a problem when in reality less than 10% had an issue with it.
