"What defines an institution's core principles? They're what's left when you cut everything else away.

A fiscal year 2015 budget drill, held in the spring of 2013, forced Academy officials to take a close look at what programs fit into the Academy's foremost mission: to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character motivated to lead the Air Force in service to their nation. If the Academy cut programs until it couldn't cut any further, what would be left?"

One of the main problems I see and have seen many times before; which is just my opinion; is that the air force and the academy emphasize the "WELL ROUNDED INDIVIDUAL". They emphasize this when recruiting academy and ROTC cadets, as well as their enlisted corp. They understand how important it is.

Yet, they tend to forget all about this when they start cutting back on programs, education, etc... They forget that it's sports, summer ops overseas, grass roots programs, ALL the different degree majors, etc. that make these young individuals so "Well Rounded" and the type of leaders and followers that they are wanting in the military.

In my opinion, instead of the military trying to "Do more with less"; maybe they ought to try DOING LESS. Meaning, don't cut back in the ancillary programs, benefits, classes, etc. that make the quality of the men and women of the military the best there is. Instead; cut back in the future manning. Enforce payback by nations who promised to pay for our help. Our initial involvement in the middle east spoke of the countries we were helping; paying for us to be there. How did that work out???

An entire book could be written on how the military can be more efficient without affecting the military members or how the military prepares their members to be such a well rounded leaders and followers. Too much politics and bureaucracy and not enough common sense and actual caring for our military men and women.
