Thinking about LEAD

So last week my shirt called me into his office to talk about this, said I'd be a good candidate, talked to my commander to get his "blessing". I contacted my local ALO and talked with him for about an hour, I told him I really don't have the strongest high school grades, I had a 3.0, I took many computer science and IB classes, 3 ap classes. I haven't taken the ACT or SAT but am planning that now. I'm good at academics when I put my mind to it, but really don't have as much to show as others. I wasn't the "best" kid in high school. But after serving in the military for over a year I've really matured a lot. I'm physically fit and have done a lot of work on my base (like a lot, I'm in comm and we are seriously undermanned, and still got this base running) So getting rec letters, or showing my performance is no problem. I've done a lot of volunteering. 5- Level. It's just if I'm to do this I'd have to get out of my deployment (this January), and change a lot of my plans I had going, and I don't want to do this unless I know I have an alright chance of making this. Maybe I could get some insight from some airman who got an appointment and can give it to me straight I'd really appreciate it.

I guess what I'd ask you from my position as an ALO is: "Why do you want to do this?" If it's because the Shirt said you'd be a good candidate...and the CC gave his blessing...great but why do YOU want to do this? If that answer isn't pretty immediate, then I think you have some serious thinking to do.
There is NOBODY on this board that can tell you "Go for it, you have a great chance!" Many of us have worked with LEAD candidates and we've seen many selected and many more not selected; sometimes there's no rhyme or reason, from our perspective, on who is chosen but USAFA has a criteria each year of the type airman they are looking for.
Hopefully one of our members that did LEAD will contact you, but in the meantime I think you need to decide how serious you are about this.

Pretty weak.

I'd take Flieger's advice and take a step back to look at the opportunity from your perspective alone. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any specific questions.
