Good afternoon, I have just received my TWE. I have decided that I will be attending a Service Academy Prep School( Non-Sponsored) as my plan B. I know that I will work on all aspects of my application while attending prep school, but I'm still looking for any other useful tips for a college re-applicant. If y'all could give your input, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is a sticky at the top of the Forum regarding reapplication...all the advice and info you need..plus some !

Yes, read that stickied thread and then read it again. When I re-applied, I followed it to a T and was successful. Obviously that does not mean anything is guaranteed, but if you want to maximize your chances of admission, you can’t go wrong following the advice provided there.

Keep in mind that USNA prefers that applicants attend a 4-year college vs. a prep school. The sticky discusses reasons that a prep school may be helpful for some. However, do not believe anyone who tells you that self-prep gives you a better chance at a successful reapplication -- at least for USNA.

Self-prep was the right choice for my DS. He is looking forward to joining the Brigade at I-Day in June. What gives a re-applicant a better chance isn't where they go for their re-application year but what they do during it. Do they improve the weaknesses in their application? Do they take and achieve in the right classes? Do they demonstrate leadership, desire and perseverance? Its up to the individual, not the place they go.

What I wrote is not my opinion. It is what USNA advises re-applicants. No question that you can be appointed via self-prep and for some it's the right move. It's just important that folks know what USNA says -- they can make their own decisions from there.

You are 100% correct that everyone who received a turndown can -- and needs to -- improve his/her application package.

One data point doesn't make a rule. While I agree with the statement that what the reapplicant does with what he/she choses to do is probably more important than where they do it, Admissions' preference is clear. That said, not every one has the resources to attend a quality 4 year college (or one of the Prep Schools for that matter), so whatever you do ..do it well !

Definitely call your admissions counselor and ask what can be improved—usually, they'll ask you what you think you need to improve on so be ready with an answer. Do something meaningful with your summer (if possible), show that you are committed to bettering yourself as a leader. Do very well academically next year and stay in shape. Get your application done early. These are all things I did this past year, and it worked out for me this year as a college re-applicant.
