So I’ve recently received a nomination and LOA to USMMA, and this leads me to a few questions about the academy. I understand they are funded by DoT and not DoD, like the other SA’s. I know this means everything is not covered and there is not a monthly stipend. I have seen online that the average cost per year is around 6-10k. How accurate is this for anyone who has been through the academy? And what is not covered by the academy? Thanks.

Start here, while awaiting other responses:

The table referenced above is fairly accurate for the TOP half. Understand the bottom section is highly variable - but you would also have personal travel expenses at any other SA. Health insurance is variable and dependent on whether or not your existing (parent employer provided) health insurance covers you in the NYC region. By default, students are expected to pay for the student health insurance plan BUT there is a waiver process that will review your existing coverage to see if it meets the requirements. In our case, my company plan meets the requirements and we do not currently have the student plan. THE BIG CAVEAT here is that students are highly highly highly encouraged to take on the student plan during SEA YEAR expeditions to ensure you are well covered INTERNATIONALLY.

That figure is very exaggerated. The total cost for each of my KP kids (class of 2013 and class of 2021) for the total four years was under $10,000 each. The first year will be the most expensive because you will be required to buy your computer as well as a package of materials which will be different depending on whether you select a deck or engine major. You will also have to provide your own approved health insurance or buy the policy offered by the academy which will add $1,500-$2,000 per year. Your expenses will drop significantly for your third and second class years much of which you spend at sea, then go up a bit in first class year when there are expenses related to graduation. Also, keep in mind that you will be paid about $1,200 or more per month for your time at sea. If cost is an issue for you, KP has a very helpful staff in the financial aid office. You can use most outside scholarships and you can also apply for specific maritime scholarships after your first year. In addition, many financial awards are given to the graduating class each year, from hundreds or even thousands per year. Good luck with your decision.

So I noticed the cost includes travel and misc fees at 4K per year. These costs are completely variable based on personal situation (I personally live driving distance to KP so the cost is very inflated). Also the cost table doesn’t have an off-set for monies earned during sea year.

Everyone should look at the table and see what fees really apply personally.

Just points worth noting.

From the table, it shows $3600 out of pocket expenses for class 2025, but zero for previous classes. Does anyone know why those expenses are transferred from academy to midshipman? Because the funding is shorter than before?

They are non-recurring costs for freshman. You only but your computer once and passport I’d good for 10 years.

Considering the cost of attending KP should take as long as it takes to eat a potato chip. A well connected person told me no one has not attended due to financial considerations.

When I attended there was “midshipman fees” that was a few grand the first year and less the next two years then the same as plebe year for your senior year. This included things like laundry and hair cut expenses, and it was mandatory to be paid. I’d say this came out to about 7,000$ thru the four years don’t quote me. Then an additional 1000$ for supplies for sea year some will be reimbursed like hotel and travel to and from ship. Then obviously every midshipmen will spend money going to local bars and enjoying NY during their time at KP. All and all I’d say the cost of 4 years at the Academy to enjoy the experience is gonna come out to about 20,000$ when you take all factors into play. But you also earn around 10,000$ at sea so net cost is about 10,000$.
