Is is still possible to turn a 4 year scholarship into a 5 year with a difficult major such as mechanical engineering? I’ve read many threads about this but they are around 10 years old.

I know several AROTC engineering cadets now that are approved for 5-year scholarships for engineering majors. It was not permitted with NROTC when my DS was an engineering major. I don't know about AFROTC.

DS has had discussions with his leadership about this. He’s an engineering major and it’s not unusual at his school to need more than four years. It seems that it’s done on a case-by-case basis, and that you need to be showing solid progress academically, physically and militarily. In other words, be a model student/cadet to maximize the chances of earning extra $ for extra time.

Which branch? AFROTC will give a waiver for many engineering/architecture programs. I think the student has to request it though.

My DS was offered a 5th year via his AFROTC Detachment Commander to complete his Masters in Mech/Aero before commissioning, this was last semester. The Commander told him to take it since it is not too common for the AF to offer the extra year.

My DS and I had this conversation with an AFROTC commander at a university in Florida. AFROTC can extend to five years for some technical degrees. Maybe up to each detachment? Great question to ask during the process.

MIT AFROTC actual told my kid this is a common goal to go 5 years and get the Masters.
Do they add an additional year to their active-duty requirement if they go 5 yrs instead of 4 yrs for undergrad?

My son (NROTC) was looking at 5 year programs resulting in BS + MS in engineering at his school and wondered the same - whether we could pay for the 5th year and he then enters 1 year later, or whether Navy would pay 5th year and he adds 1 or 2 years to commitment. Or (most likely) no. He plans to figure this out in the fall when he arrives.

I have seen 4.5 years done for nursing, so definitely possible.

I assume so, good problem to have. My youngest is about to try this year after my other son got waitlisted and went USAFA. D3 Football and great grades might be my kids magic ingredients to admissions.
