Two Principal Nominations from the same MOC?

My DS received a principal nomination today for USAFA, very excited! Question though, his good friend from HS also received a principal nomination for USAFA from the same MOC. It's great news that they both received one so they can both attend USAFA, but is that possible? I was under the impression the MOC could only give out one principal nomination?

I'm not sure. I'm assuming so since he gave out the two principal noms. No clue where I would check that.

MOC must have had two Cadet spots available to him/her at USAFA this cycle. This creates the ability for that MOC to have two slates for that cycle. Each MOC can have 5 persons attending a DOD SA (charged to that MOC) at any given time. When a Cadet separates the USAFA for any reason, it creates open spot for that particular MOC.

Quote from Congressional Research Paper:

"Typically, one appointment per DOD academy per Senator and Representative is availableannually. In some years, however, a congressional office might have the opportunity to make nominations to fill multiple vacancies at an academy. "

Footnote 13: "Nominations are attached to a particular vacancy, so if a congressional office has multiple appointments available to an academy in a given year, a set of nominations is submitted for each vacancy." In the above case, the MOC is using Principle Nominations so he/she has two Principles for this cycle at USAFA.

Just thank the MOC staff and move on....all this is not in your control. Let the system work. Congratulations to DS and his friend.

Thank you for pulling the info from a good source on principal nominations and laying it out so cleanly.

Here it is for anyone wanting to do the advanced reading:

Does this mean that if a cadet leaves while at the academy, the congressperson has an additional slate to fill next go round?

During DS USNA cycle he received principal from the SR Senator. So did a young lady who he met at Boys Nation.

We came to conclude that the Senator had two slates.

Good place to be. Congrats.

Good to know, sounds like it is somewhat common. Thank you!

Actually no in most cases. If that was done, then when the class that the original cadet who left graduates then there would not be a vacancy for the next class. For example if a mid from class of "25" left right now and the MOC immediately filled the vacancy into class of 2028, then when class of 25 graduated there would be no vacancy to nominate for class of 29.

If they have used up their 5 slots currently, this makes sense to me.

Do most MOC use one per year … and use the fifth for cases like this?

The practice seems to be one per year, and in a year when 2 appointees graduate, leaving 3 at the SA, then the option is there to do 2 slates of 10 to produce 2 appointees in the incoming class. Now, if a class loses a mid charged to a Senator or Representative for any reason, I am sure Admissions coordinates closely with that elected official’s staff on the best strategy moving forward, if the goal is to have a steady population of 5 mids or cadets at the SA. You never want to pack so many appointees out of the 5 into one class year that you short a future class.

No, From what I've seen, most have a "two slot year" followed by three years of "one slot" which then repeats. That preserves the opportunity in each year of the cycle.

Thank you. Makes a lot of sense.

I don’t pay attention too closely to the nominations in my district - so I probably missed two slates in last five years. The year my son applied, they didn’t have ten candidates for his slate.

Congratulations to your DS!
My DS MOC gave a Principal NOM to DS and another Principal to someone else in district. Both to USMA. So this does happen.
There were two slates that cycle, and our MOC uses the Principal type slate whereas not all (most don’t) MOCs use Principal.

As described, maximum of 5 individuals attending any SA at one time which are charged to the MOC. Additional candidates may attend from the same District, but those Nominations are charged elsewhere.
See Nominations sticky for a deeper dive in that.
