University awarded scholarships and AROTC tuition/fees award

Not a private college, it’s a state school, University of Wyoming. The scholarship is not specifically tied to tuition, and it may be used by the student for anything they need it for. That might be the difference? It’s not a large excess, but he plans to use it towards his rent which will be helpful.
I get the feeling public schools are more reasonable when it comes to this- also yes, the scholarship being not directly tied to tuition might contribute. Thanks!

To clarify, it is a merit based scholarship, not financial aid.

Yes, to tag on to this he does like it!

Just one add on come tax time. Generally academic scholarship money used for room and board is taxable.

DS received an academic scholarship from his University. It is not specific to tuition, it's not a huge amount, but he is planning to use it to supplement his stipend for room and board etc and will be living off campus this year. His 3 year AROTC scholarship is set to kick in this fall and he'll be taking tuition and fees as he's attending out of state. Does anyone know if AROTC can use his Academic award from the University to reduce their payments for his tuition and fees, essentially taking credit for it? He is in communication with the Battalion on it, but the HR contact needed to find the answer for him ( she's new). I'm really hoping that money will be his to use as that's what he's been expecting, but wondered if anyone has any knowledge of a similar situation.
My DS’s was deposited right into the account he add in his AROTC scholarship application. Basically his checking account.
He uses to cover tuition and books.

Scholarship was paid yesterday and son had a credit balance from his scholarship. Expect that to show in his bank account shortly!

The Army doesn't take credit for other scholarship awards, however they will only pay what is listed as due for tuition. For example if you submit the tuition bill to the Army, and it shows a credit for another scholarship, the Army will pay only the remaining amount due for tuition. So when submitting your tuition bill to the Army, ensure that there are not any credited payments towards tuition in order to allow the Army to pay for 100% of the tuition.
