Hello all!

Recently, I intended on applying to the Academy for the next class. Since this didn't end up working out, I decided to do Air Force ROTC at a college near me. I was wondering if it might be worth it to apply to the academy once more after I complete a year or so of college. I understand that this might take another year of schooling, but I figured I'd ask to see if there were any alternative methods.

Thanks! :)

Yeah you can totally do that! Make sure that your college transcript is flawless and that you are a great AFROTC cadet!

There are no transfer options into USAFA outside of entering as a freshman. In my experience, reapplicants or those who have demonstrated academic success at other colleges do tend to fair well in admissions.

Yes, if you really want it. Not sure for USAFA, but at USNA, approximately 28% of the Class of 2024 came from colleges, Naps and prep-schools.

Thanks a lot for this! I'm personally just wrestling with if I think an extra year or two of schooling would be worth it. We'll see how I feel when the time comes around; For now, I'm sticking to keeping fit and working hard in college regardless!

Thank you everyone for your responses! Means a ton :)

There's nothing that compares to USAFA but, in the end, everyone commissions as a 2nd Lt. anyway. I'd recommend watching those "1 second everyday" videos on youtube and see if that gives you some more to ponder about. I'll link one.

I highly recommend trying again next year. When I received my non-select letter last year, I was a little upset, but I bounced right back the next day thinking, "What can I do better?" I essentially devoted the last year of my life to improving my application in every way possible. After hearing feedback, numerous people have told me that I have done everything they could have asked for to improve.

Alongside this, AFROTC is a great experience and one I definitely recommend to any reapplicants. After my first week of participating, it really solidified that becoming an Air Force officer is what I wanted to pursue. This gave me even more drive to succeed. I hope that some of my knowledge, drill practice, and other things I learned this year will be useful at the Academy.

I just received a call the other day that an appointment will show up in my portal soon, so it is very well possible to get in after a year of college. Good luck, and make the most of your year in AFROTC!

Looks like a big wave will be coming out on Saturday, I’ve seen numerous people talk about receiving phone calls from MOCs. Congratulations!

If my kid came to me after one (or two) years of success at a civilian college and on their way to earning that commission they claimed to want so badly thru rotc

id ask this

exactly how bad do you want this SA? Because if you are just considering this I’d reconsider.

Every year students show up at SAs IDay with every resolve to graduate in 4 years——and some are gone within 4 hours 4 days 4 months.

Its a risk. So wanting this really badly and knowing that nothing but injury or sickness will knock you off your path——then I’d tell them to go for it if they felt that strongly.

Otherwise stay in school and get that commission thru rotc.

My DS's 2 roommates, one was a sophomore transfer from Ohio State. The other one was a 3rd year chemistry major also from Ohio State. Food for thoughts.

I have a classmate that missed his graduation from Cal-Berkeley to enter BCT.

When we realized this and asked what mental injury he had sustained at Berkeley, he said he'd always wanted to attend the academy, never got in, and then found out he was PPQ so thought he'd give it one last shot...

And the rest of the story...?? Did he graduate from USAFA? Did he complete UPT?

He did graduate but I lost track of him after that. I heard, years later, that someone had heard that he was working in the "foreign technologies division" at Wright Patterson AFB...very TS stuff, but that's all I know.

Congrats! Did you also get the AFROTC nomination?

I actually did not. AFROTC is a competitive program and I didn’t entirely feel comfortable asking in case it gave me a bad first impression (I probably overthought this, but others I spoke with agreed). However, I was fairly confident when it came to nominations due to my ranking on last years slate.

I thought the same thing. I'm a second year applying in AFROTC and I got the nomination but I was struggling with the idea of letting my cadre know I'm applying to USAFA. My detachment commander (Lt Col) was super supportive when I did ask. He ended up giving me a letter of recommendation and helped me get the nomination through AFROTC so I guess it payed off. Again congrats on the appointment hopefully I'll have some good news soon too.
