USAFA Class of 2023 Appointment Thread

Did you speak to someone in admissions yourself? This sounds very different than what they have done in years past.

I have lost all hope that my son will get a waiver anymore. He has a solid 4.0 GPA, 1420 SAT with a math 790 and lots of APs and Honors. 2 nominations. But was Medically disqualified as he self reported a Bunion in foot which has never been measured technically if it’s above the 15 degree and DOD says pending waiver submission but no updates from AF for past 1 month. When my son called his ALO he said waivers are raised if the feel the candidate is competitive only . So I guess my son was not that competitive this year

Same boat here. 4.17 GPA on USAFA portal, 1390 SAT, 31 ACT, AP+honors, varsity captain, Eagle scout, 2 nominations as well, coincidentally. DoDMERB status has been pending waiver submission since February 13 for a mild vertebral fracture when I was 14 (spine doctor sent letter to DoDMERB clearing for duty in AMI). I contacted medical officer at USAFA only to be told briefly "not pursuing waiver at this time." I applied to USNA as well, told that I would have to receive a conditional appointment then waiver process initiated. I figure it'd be similar across academies. I've been pretty fed up with the lack of transparency in regards to waiver authorities and the fact that I started my medical process in early September. Recommend having your son reach out to Lawrence.E.Mullen.civ@mail.mil - the deputy chief at DoDMERB. He's been helpful to me in getting contacts at each academy and is available by email to students 24/7/365. I'd love to hear of any updates you get. Hope this helped somewhat.

My son did email him but has not had any replies from him since last month. He didn’t want to keep bothering him with emails.

Definitely keep trying to contact him. Not wanting to bother someone would be a sad reason not to get into an academy. He could call DoDMERB and try to get through to somebody like his assigned technician who could help. I spoke to Larry Mullen yesterday in fact. Just keep up the emails with him and have him call DoDMERB directly. He could also email the helpdesk email listed on the DoDMERB portal. Point being - don't let a worrying of bothering someone get in the way of getting deserved answers.

I did not. My DS's college adviser called the admissions department and reported back. Meanwhile, DS said that his friend's ALO heard that appointment notifications were delayed. The adviser's info is 2nd hand, not 3rd...

I did not. My DS's college adviser called the admissions department and reported back. Meanwhile, DS said that his friend's ALO heard that appointment notifications were delayed. The adviser's info is 2nd hand, not 3rd...

If this is true, this makes travel to the appointee tour dates challenging and expensive. Booking last minute can be very expensive.

Not to mention just dragging the process out just makes it more stressful for those that have still not heard anything. Also, if you are on the fence about USAFA and you have another SA appointment, if you get to the middle of April do you take the other appointment or even another college? Waiting too long seems likes it could cost USAFA a few good kids that might be a good fit. Just seems like waiting to long is not a good practical idea for lots of reasons.

This sounds similar to what we heard directly from admissions on the USAFA tour mid-March.

Any thoughts on the idea that maybe they are delaying the appointments and denials this year because they are re-evaluating the cadets they have chosen due to the recent college admissions scandal? The day the federal prosecutors disclosed that to the public was 12 March... one day before they sent out over 400 offers of appointment. Maybe after that they decided to postpone updating a lot of portals because they need to take a step back and make sure they are focusing more on merit?
 
Regents of the Univ. of Cal. v. Bakke was a Supreme Court case that ruled that creating racial or ethnic quotas were impermissible. Since USAFA was established by Congress and is governed by a committee with the Air Force, do you think the Academy has the ability to not particularly follow the Supreme Court ruling, and stating that it is with the vision, as Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria said in an article titled "Why Diversity?" posted on 14 February, "Embracing, celebrating and striving for diversity isn’t just the right thing to do, nor is it just a sensitive and politically correct, knee-jerk response. It is the application of our collective intelligence — our uniqueness coming together to fulfill our duty to provide the nation with the most effective and lethal fighting force we have the capacity to employ on the battlefield. To put it in the terms of a military leader: Diversity is a force multiplier. We must do this together — all ranks and ages, races and religions, sexual orientations and identities — all of us."

At my church, there is a guy there who used to be on the admissions board for USAFA (small world, right?), and he talked to me about how if you had two applications, one being race/ethnic background A, the other being race/ethnic background B, if A had lower scores on SAT/ACT, GPA, etc. than B, but they had too many B race/ethnic background students and not enough A students, they would let in the A student.

I agree, delaying the appointee/denial process until April seems to me like the Academy can lose out on some really good students because they simply do not have the time to wait around for USAFA as compared to if they did not delay. Along with that, it also messes up appointee tours, which messes up a lot of scheduling for personnel running the tours too. Something has to be going on for them to put a temporary pause on admission notifications for them to knowingly mess up all of the timing.
 
Looking at the post above, funny only a conversation like that can happen in a church. lol. To all reading this I wouldn’t listen to all the rumors about the protocol changing in regard to appointments. I am sure they are still coming out as prior years. We are all back from vacation and spring break today. Stay positive good things to come.

MOC called to say DS has acceptance to USAFA but still waiting for BFE.
MOC called to say DS has acceptance to USMA too and within 3 days received BFE.
Did any of the above appointees get BFE from USAFA & how long after MOC call did one get BFE? Thanks.

MOC called to say DS has acceptance to USMA too and within 3 days received BFE.
Did any of the above appointees get BFE from USAFA & how long after MOC call did one get BFE? Thanks.

No BFE's, just the call from MOC and the status change on portal.
 
It’s wonderful to read everyone’s great news on acceptance. My DS received primary nomination and as others, hasn’t heard anything to date. Potential pilot qualified, AP classes, Eagle Scout, etc.. it’s difficult on everyone to wait but then I think what amazing people they are to be able to achieve such great personal success.

Not to mention just dragging the process out just makes it more stressful for those that have still not heard anything. Also, if you are on the fence about USAFA and you have another SA appointment, if you get to the middle of April do you take the other appointment or even another college? Waiting too long seems likes it could cost USAFA a few good kids that might be a good fit. Just seems like waiting to long is not a good practical idea for lots of reasons.

Yes, this. Our ds wants to visit his backup school only if he doesn't get an appointment. We've put off making travel arrangements but the deadline to accept his scholarship there is coming up quickly.

For any former students...

Have you ever heard of someone getting turned away from a certain degree because they tested into a lower math? I want to go for meteorology but I know for a fact I'm not going to do great on this placement test and will get put into their remedial algebra/trig or whatever...and I'm curious if that could give them reason to say I can't go for meteorology right off the bat? (I mean obviously down the line if I fail a course, thats a different story)

DD received a call from our congressman and senator regarding her appointment to USAFA, and no BFE has come yet (received appointment January 30). We found out about her appointment to USMA when a BFE showed up on our doorstep a few weeks later. I don't know how or when the USAFA comes to be, but I can't wait to find out.

If your DD truly received an appointment on 30 January, her portal should have updated and she has to hit the "accept" button. At which time many online forms become available and must be completed in a timely manner.
USAFA does not send out paper BFEs.

My DS was a recruited athlete so the circumstances may differ to a certain degree. He was first notified by a Coach on 11 Mar offering "congrats" stating that he would receive a direct appointment. A week later the portal had not updated nor had he rec'd a call from MOC and we began to worry that there was some sort of error. Finally, on 21 Mar, the portal updated and he accepted, but he did not receive notification from his MOC until 25 Mar, days after he accepted his appointment.

I pray that those continuing to wait will soon receive the good news they have been patiently (or impatiently) waiting to hear as we have learned how stressful the process and "waiting game" can be on the candidate and family.
