I was trying to do the math on USAFA's nominations every year. If there are 435 congressmen and 100 senators that give nominations each year, where are the other 2,500ish nominations coming from? There are on average 3,000 fully qualified candidates each year, so I was just curious.

Each MOC and Senator can give up to ten nominations per slot … that gives 5300 potential nominations (generally speaking).

Plus nominations from other sources, e.g. vice president, JROTC, etc. There's a nominations “sticky post” in SAF that explains it all very well.

Hi! I’m A junior in Highschool and interested in USAFA I’m not yet 17 but what actions can I take to ensure my acceptance into the academy, how would I write my nomination request letter, how soon should I turn in my nomination request form, how soon should I get my letters of recommendations from my teacher and other body. When and how do I get in contact with an ALO near me to help guide me through everything. Does going to a recruiting office help heighten my chances of getting in? What happens if I get low scores on my CFA? I’m sorry if this is a lot of questions I’m just very enthusiastic about getting in possibly and reaching my goals.

There aren’t actions you can take to ensure acceptance into an Academy. You must put forward your best application and beat others competing against you for the appointment.

A1Janitor said it best. There's not anything you can do to guarantee getting into USAFA. I'm on my third application right now, and what I've found out is that you can greatly improve your application each year. If you are truly interested in getting into USAFA and you set it as a long-term goal, you can increase your chances of getting in each year.

Before doing anything else, if I were you, I would ask myself these questions, why do I want to attend USAFA? How well do I know USAFA, the things that are going on at USAFA? What do I know about military life? Am I okay with following strict rules and regulations? As one parent posted in another blog, hates to see cadets try so hard and get in, only to discover he/she doesn't fit in. As someone has suggested above, try to attend one of their summer seminars to get a better view. Once you have successfully answered those questions without reservations (sound like I am taking an oath on I-Day LOL), USAFA is the next best thing since sliced breads! Good luck!
