USAFA Prep School Class of 2019?

Thanks for your response Humey. DD’s intended major at USAFA is Computer and Network Security, at USMMA it is Maritime Logistics and Security. She plans on enlisting in AF after graduation and retiring with 20 years. Then on to a career with the FBI. So it is a pretty well laid out plan. Her dilemma is that both academies can get her to where she wants to go. Perhaps it will come down to the food...

Some things to consider. If location isn't an issue for her and she plans to enter the AF after graduation -- then I can see why going to USMMA with her sibling and finishing in 4 years is a good option for her. BUT also if she really is intent on joining the AF no matter which academy she goes to; going to the AF Academy will set her up with lifelong friends that she will continue to see throughout her career. Hopefully seeing both places will help her. She should tour both the AFA Prep School and the Academy itself. The are located within a few miles of each other.

I am confused by the bolded statement above. If she is planning on either USAFAPS or USMMA, she will not be enlisting in the AF after she graduates from either. If she goes to USAFAPS she will have to technically enlist after high school graduation to attend the prep school, but its a very specified enlistment, and will only last the prep school year. Once she graduates from USAFA she will be commissioned as 2LT in the AF.

Based on her stated goals, I would recommend she take the Prep School offer and not look back! My hubby is a USAFA preppy and he wouldn't trade that year for anything. Our son will be a NAPSTER in July. That prep school year counts towards time in service for both retirement and pay purposes, by the way! This keeps her time line for her 20 years of service then fbi career the same as if she was direct entry. (the 4 years at a service academy do not count toward retirement)

DS was notified that he has an offer to attend USAFA Prep. He also has an appointment to USMA. Its tough watching him trying to weigh his options. I'm trying to give him all the facts so he can make a decision based on facts and on where he envisions himself in 6 years. Hats off to all the kids who've already accepted thier PSchool offers. I know it's not an easy decision--I made the decision to go to USAFAPS in 1985--it was the best decision of my USAFA career.

My DS was actually very happy to get USMAPS over a direct appointment and would have even chosen it over any other direct appointment. He spent 5 years of his life at USMA when his dad was an admissions officer. It's always been home to my kids even though we have lived in Germany for 7 years. DS gets to reconnect with several of his WP elementary classmates who got appointment, and the icing on the cake is that his dad just was just asked to come back to teach at the academy, so he'll have his dad and stepmom there for support.
