USAFA Waiting Thread C/O 2027

How did you know the prep offer came thru?? Do you have to keep checking the portal?? My DS TWE indicated both were declined. Good luck to everyone on plan B
My son received an email and he was also checking the portal because something changed the day before of receiving his offer. The rejection letter that he received was for the Academy, the Prep and the Falcon Foundation, so basically he was out.

As I understand a graduate from the USAFA and a graduate of the AFROTC program are on par with each other when it comes to serving in the AF. It really lends towards the experience you want over the 4 years
Yep, you leave as a Second Lieutenant just like a USAFA grad. The same goes for OTS. It’s up to you at that point, other commissioning sources have the same opportunities.

Oh crap. I heard this could be an appointment or a rejection. Does anyone know if they are still sending out appointments? All I’ve seen is twe’s so this is freaking me out.
My DS let it sit there for days because he thought is was just a formality since he didn’t have a nomination and was expecting it to be a rejection. But it turned out to be an offer for prep school so you just never know until you open it.

An active duty USAF Colonel and my son just got his TWE. 2 nominations from congressmen in two states, a senator, and presidential nomination (4 total) Every interview he got lead to a nomination. Straight As since kindergarten, top 2% of his class and varsity baseball and wind ensemble (was in Macys parade in 2020). Being a fighter pilot was his dream. He was denied any ROTC scholarship and now no Academy.
I plan to put in my retirement paperwork tomorrow. I didn’t go to the academy and have probably had 20 of those folks working for me… you gotta know somebody just like most thing in life I guess. The USA is forgiving student loans for kids who drop out of school, yet kids who dream to serve their country are denied scholarships. I’ve enjoyed flying F16s T-38s and traveling across the world, I appreciated the ROTC and medical school scholarship and being a pilot physician but so wish they had given my son the same chance. I’ve never seen a kid so crushed and never hurt so bad myself….
I am stunned at the resume of your son and the outcome. This makes no sense. His grit is what our country needs! Your response is quite understandable and has helped my perspective on my own son’s TWE. Thank you for sharing and I wish you both all the best moving forward.

DS TWE, but he already has AF ROTC scholarship and we put down deposit at great school. Good news, they all end up at the same officer training school in 4 years. Plus I'm betting he'll have more fun along the way.

It came through today?

I just received my 3rd and final TWE. 4.93 high school GPA, 7 5's on AP exams, Eagle Scout, 4 total nominations, letters of rec from active duty Army officers, near perfect CFA, 3.91 college GPA, 34 on the ACT, Army ROTC related honors, several clubs and sports, et cetera. I could not have done any more to get in, though I congratulate everyone who did in fact hear good news. 3 years ago when I applied to USAFA for the first time, I never would've thought that I would go from dreams of being a fighter pilot to instead looking at branching Army infantry. Maybe it's fate. Good luck to everyone who hasn't heard anything yet.

Reapplication? Could you see areas he needed to improve on for competitiveness? Test scores? Leadership?

Acceptance for all reach schools are casting calls rather than award ceremonies. He sounds like a solid, solid candidate. The competition is so fierce.

That's hard to fathom. Sounds like AROTC is going well. The Army is lucky to have you.

I'm curious, after your first or second try, did you contact anyone and try to find out where you were coming up short? It's certainly not obvious from your post what that area was, but that's what makes it puzzling to me. Seems like if they like reapplicants, which everyone says they do, then there should at least be a bit of a roadmap.

I did. Admissions said my ACT was a bit low (it was a 32 originally, but my math score was a 27), my essays didn't show enough about me and were "too humble", and my CFA was poor. This time around, I think the only thing they could critique are my essays, as everything else is objectively good. I could've probably run a bit faster and thrown the ball a bit further for the CFA as well, but I maxed the pull ups, push ups, and came close with everything else.

Just curious if I could be offered a prep school slot. I am a pretty high level wrestler, 4x team captain, multiple time state placer in Ohio (pretty tough), fargo qualifier, basically been wrestling my whole life. I was recruited by mostly MAC schools but never any service academy. I have a 4.256 GPA weighted and have only taken 5 AP’s, and 3 years of Spanish. I scored 28 composite on ACT (everything was 29-30 except my English only 24) I only took it once and didn’t study because I didn’t really care about it at the time. I really regret that now. I’m in NHS and national spanish honor society. Involved with FFA and am a national qualifier for DECA. I volunteer a ton and work 30+ hours a week at a burger joint. I scored pretty high(almost maxed) on CFA and am medically qualified. Didn’t even start my application until August but ended up completing it fairly quickly and got a nomination. However, I know I lost that slate because my friend ended up being nominated and appointed by same house member. I know my accolades are not as high as some others, just wondering if prep school could be a possibility even though my grades are okay?

You have a very strong resume with only one weak point (your ACT) and if you haven't already received a TWE, prep school may be in the cards. Generally, prep school appointments seem to only go to people with one weak area, so I wouldn't be too surprised if you get a slot. Keep hope alive.

Exactly. Most of the guys in pilot training with my DS (USAFA grad) are ROTC grads.

Thank you for your service to our country. I, too am having awful feelings about this selection process.. My son received MOC nominations to both USAFA & USNA and attended USNA SS last year. A retired AF Colonel, FBI Agent, and Principal and teachers gave exceptional remarks on his behalf. He has served his community in over 280 documented hours while in high school; all AP classes, First chair violin Chamber Orchestra and Varsity baseball starter in a Texas 6A HS! He received a thanks but no thanks in both portals this week. I am a retired SSA FBI served our country almost 29 years. I don't get it...He has a great plan B..Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach scholarship in his pocket with AFROTC..They want him..

Thanks. That's helpful to know for a potential reapplicant. Who gave you the feed back? Was it an ALO, or a silver/blue team member?
