I was just awarded a NROTC scholarship and USC(SoCal) is my first choice. I was just wondering should I notify the school or unit of my scholarship acceptance. Will that help my admission chances? I am Chemical Engineering, so it’s obviously very competitive and I’ll take anything I can get to improve my chances.

This is a perennial issue on SAF. Some say it matters. Some say it doesn't. What no one can deny is that it can't hurt. There is no downside.

If possible have the ROTC unit contact admissions as well.

Should I just send a email to both saying this is my number one choice and I’ve been awarded a scholarship?

Well, telling both they are you're #1 choice would be disingenuous, wouldn't it? Figure out your #1 choice and tell them that. Simply tell the other you have the scholarship.

I’m saying email both the admissions office at usc and the nrotc unit at usc

My daughter was on the wait list at her school when awarded her scholarship (not as competitive as USC!) and it wasn’t the school she was on the waitlist for it was the nursing program. The same day my DD told the ROO she had been waitlisted he talked to the Dean of Nursing and by the end of the day she had an email welcoming her to the school. Like I said, it wasn’t USC, but Like has been said above it is a no brainer and can of hurt!
