I am considering applying for the Class of 2027. I am in my second year of college now, and I would be 21 years old by then. I know that I still qualify on paper, but would it make sense to still apply at this point in the game? Thanks.

I had a classmate at WP who completed three years at Georgia Tech before he decided to enter West Point as a plebe. Your situation is very common. The question is how much do you really want to be an Army officer with a commission through West Point?

My DS is finishing his Freshman year of college and is applying to WP.
If it is something you want, go for it. You only get one life and you don’t want to regret not going for it.
Good luck.

My oldest has a bff who did three years at an engineering school before going to USMA. He did great things at USMA and is doing well in the Army too. So it is possible.

It only makes sense if it makes sense to you. Presuming that your ultimate goal is to serve as a commissioned officer, there are different paths. You don’t mention if you’re in ROTC, but if you are, you’d be halfway there by the time R-Day rolls around. Do you want to start over and wait another four years? If you’re not in ROTC, you can still join and even win a sideload scholarship for your last two years. And then there’s OCS after you graduate. It really comes down to your goal and how quickly you want to achieve it.

I’m a current plebe and I know plenty of people that are older than you and are plebes. One of my friends would’ve been a junior this year but he’s a plebe now and he’s doing great here and loves it. I know a good amount of people who are 22-23 and don’t regret coming here. You’ve got to think if it’s something you personally could live with in terms of starting over. It makes sense if you see it helping your future :)

Age is just a number for you in the process. You are well below the qualification limits, so I wouldn't consider you old by that standard. What really matters is do you really want to attend USMA and why?

What would I tell my own if they asked:

“You had better be really sure this is something you really want. Not just thinking about.

Every year plebs show up at a SA or military prep school that are absolutely certain this is for them—-and weeks later or months later they have quit and are back home.

Its not for everyone and it might not be for you”

The why you the op are considering this could be very important.

I also have known Cadets who transferred from other universities. I knew one who was entering his senior year on an ROTC scholarship when he was accepted to West Point. He was one of the happiest Cadets I knew. For him it wasn’t just about the end goal, but the journey as well.
But in the words of Curly, the secret to life is one thing. And that’s something that you need to figure out.
