USNA CLASS OF 2024 Update-List-Yourself APPOINTMENTS

Hi bbear47, I could have written your post myself regarding my DS. Our heads are spinning with the news of his denial for the NROTC scholarship. We are still holding out for good news from the Naval Academy or an offer to NAPS.

Sorry for both of our kiddos...but they are learning a valuable lesson in humility. Fingers crossed for good news soon.

Plebe to be?

My DS didn’t get the NROTC scholarship either and a week later received an appointment to the USAFA. Don’t lose hope until you are told differently speaking from experience. Felt the same way and my DS after hearing the news from the NROTC, but the appointment a week later was redemption for all the hard work. Hope this helps.

That is actually surprising! USNA is looking for females and minorities.

The poster said her daughter didn’t get an NROTC scholarship and is still waiting on USNA.

Of course they are looking for all demographics.

I politely disagree! Shouldn't they be looking for the most qualified person?

They admit the candidates that will make up the best class at USNA and hopefully produce the best officers. Their criteria might not match what you think is correct, but it works for the institution. You just joined today. Looking at your posts so far it appears that your child didn’t get an appointment and you’re blaming someone else for it. You should take some time to read all of the current threads on here to get an idea of how things work.

Thank you for the experience information. She only wanted USNA so her back ups are regular colleges, but she really wants to be in the US Navy. It is very discouraging as she has put so much into this process. We are still keeping hope that the appointment will come in.

Sorry I think the poster may be on to something..."transparency" should be what we are looking for not argument. I for one am confused why some of my kids got in and others did not. Maybe they need to just open up the process and say here is the citeria as opposed to the secrecy. Senator in my state said,“I’m all about transparency,” Portman said. “I think the information ought to be out there for voters to look at.” This was in response to Burma investigations... why shouldn't that transfer to other areas where the taxpayer is paying the bill? Just sayin' open the process.

Pattern Agree 1000%. Why not let folks see The Who, what , where and why! If your not hiding something or favoring someone the process should be open. Direct quote from previous Supe to me in a conversation he had when CNO called about a candidate... CNO," tell me about candidate ___" Supe's answer "They're ok there are no strings to pull!"

She can also do NROTC at state colleges, but there is a process with that you should start looking into that for her Plan B now because there are deadlines with that too. If she really wants to go into the Navy as a officer another great option

I believe that the folks who are pushing for this to be transparent are ignoring how personnel decisions/matters are handled even in municipalities or agencies where there are strict sunshine laws. In every case that I can think of, those matters are handled in a closed session and not provided to the media. Further, I don't want to further point out the civ/mil divide experience wise but deliberations for selection boards for promotion, command, service schools, etc are CLOSED and by law, all deliberations and rankings are not available. I get that people are irate that their child has spent a year or more in the application process but think about the Colonel or Navy Captain who has spent THIRTY YEARS on active duty and can't BY LAW see where they fell short for General/Admiral. If they are lucky, they may get a private whisper about what was missing for them but even that is far from transparency. Again, that is governed by public law as are most personnel matters.

Question: DD was turned down by NROTC scholarship, does this indicate anything to how USNA is viewing her application? She is triple qualified with a nomination. She is in the top 1% of her class (ranked 10 out of 300) has a 4.37 GPA and has all A's an B's in her AP classes. She has also been a Varsity Lacrosse Goalie for the past 3 years. I am baffled by the decision of the NROTC. I know they are two different processes but I am just shocked.
Test Scores?
CFA Scores?

How do you know that she is 3Q? USNA does not send out this info

By the way, not to nit-pick but class rank of 10 out of 300 is not top 1% #STEMmatters

I won't go into her scores, as people around here do nit pick a lot and I hate the judgement. I was just looking for a little support and I did get that from some. I really don't need people telling me anything negative to bring me down on our hopes of an appointment. My DD has done very well and worked hard to be the top 10 students in her class so don't nit pick. I am proud of it and so is she. I appreciate your service for our country and my daughter wants to do the same, that's it. She just needs the chance.

And you should be proud. She seems like a great candidate.

But it isn’t nitpicking. Top ten is great. It’s not top 1%. It’s between 3% to 4%.

Some of these old guys are brutally honest ... but they aren’t trying to bring anyone down.

And this thread is for appointments. These discussions should happen in a different thread imo.

So true. We all want the best for our kids and we all think they are simply the bee's knees and we will all wonder for the rest of our days what was missing if they don't get selected for what they were shooting for. Our house waits on pins and needles to hear back from USAFA and USNA and NROTC and MIT, but alea iacta est as the saying goes - there's nothing any of us can do about it now. If it makes you feel better to vent, go right ahead, but fair warning you might not get a whole ton of that kind of support here. We are all in the same boat.

sometimes the chance comes in different ways. if she doesnt get in this year, she needs to go to college/NROTC/STEM major, and grow in ways you had no idea she could, and then reapply. this does work. your daughter sounds amazing and my son was too in high school. he didnt get in last year. but the appointment came this year. just need patience.

What are you looking for in transparency ? Open Admissions meeting ? Frankly, I don't think anyone wants to see how the sausage is made. The process is really pretty straightforward in most cases, and in almost 20 years of watching it, I really haven't seen any situation where I thought the integrity of the process was challenged.
