USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

QQ- what the difference between NAPS and Foundation? My DW asked and my google-fu failed me…
I googled it and found this post that @THParent and @usna1985 posted:

It is amazing how SAF often is the first google choice.

Total doh moment!!! I googled Navy Foundation and got lost! Thanks so much for the course correction!

Did anyone else meet with the Dean of Admissions last fall when he was making his rounds to the different regions? Does an invitation to meet with the Dean get noted on their application? Do the Dean’s notes from those meetings get passed on to admissions? DD did 2 CVWs, met with the dean, met with her AO and was her company outstanding candidate at NASS. She’s been CPR for months with 4 nominations and we’re still waiting to hear something. I know, 10 more days, but it’s been tough and hearing people getting NAPS, appointments and TWEs and she’s still CPR is making us all a little (more) stir crazy.

C is for Candidate.

The Naval Academy Prep school is an actual Navy school staffed by AD and federal civilians on a naval base in Newport, RI. NAPSters have enlisted Navy status, and are therefore eligible for nominations reserved for enlisted personnel. NAPS is primarily for prior enlisted personnel, recruited athletes and those who don’t fall into either category. It is a USNA program.

Naval Academy Foundation scholarships are managed by the independent non-profit USNA Alumni Assn & Foundation. USNA Admissions provides names of candidates they would like to have the scholarship offered to. The scholarships can be used at the partner civilian prep schools on the Foundation’s website.

For either program, if the applicant successfully completes it and remains eligible in every respect, they are offered appointments.

Thanks for that extra info! (Now returning to finger’s crossed waiting…🤪)

You wouldn’t be able to tell the diffidence between an Academy grad , an OCS grad or an NROTC sourced grad (and yes my academy friends agree with this statement as well).
The point of this post is that the end game is service. Of course the academy is the shiny ball we are all reaching for. But if you’re seeking a commission in the US Navy ….that should be the end game.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

DD went to TBS as a newly minted USMC 2LT. She wisely stowed her USNA class ring. At Quantico, she and her fellow USNA grads found themselves outnumbered by 2LTs who came by way of OCS and NROTC. After a while, the question arose: Which source produced the best and worst TBS students (too soon to say anything about their officer abilities). Was it USNA or OCS or NROTC? The answer, DD discovered, was yes. As in: The best and worst came from all three.

So yes, for many, USNA is that shiny prize. It’s indeed an amazing experience. But it’s just one stop on a long journey that goes well beyond college. And it’s a guarantee of very little when it comes to gauging an officer’s future success.

As others here often say, using a very apt analogy: Bloom where you’re planted. If the TWE lands, certainly you’re entitled to a period of disappointment and frustration and maybe even anger. But then it’s time to shift to Plan B and make the most of it. Bloom where you’re planted.

This one’s for you Captain MJ!

Here we go waiters and speculators! Over the next 8 (ish) days you or your people will hear of an appointment, NAPS/Foundations, waitlist or turn down. Whichever response you’re given, it does not define you, what you do with it will. There are more qualified candidates than seats in the class and there are many paths to your goal of commissioning as an officer in the navy.

8 days friends, we got this!

Magical.

First, thank you for your service.

Second, I agree whole heartedly with your message. We have a family member in OCS now and it was the right path for him. He was able to attend the college of his choice, have his freedom, play D1 sports during his 4 years of schooling and once graduated reported to OCS. It's the right path for many. And ROTC is an awesome commissioning path as well.

I joke here about the 450-odd day wait since the app process began because in the short terms as a mom, for me it's about what I can control and the logistics of it. Will we be cramming family vaca in in June or a more leisurely vaca in July? Will she be full fledge adult in June with military obligations or will the change happen over a longer period wherein I'm mainly responsible for her? Does she need to find a room mate and purchase dorm gear or is she leaving behind all worldly belongings and departing home with a zip lock bag in her hand? Is she keeping her job this summer or will she be a plebe?

I'm sure there are many candidates and parents here processing these more easy thoughts as well as some far more complicated thoughts. Thankfully we have one another to commiserate and laugh with 'cause I don't think there are many other circumstances quite like this, or none that I've encountered just yet. SA admissions process is not for the faint of

Love it!

A year ago today (per my FB memories) my son got his accepted into NASS email. Today that will be the tea leaves I read as I wait and speculate. (Historical context, on March 24th it was 2 years since he got his Summer STEM acceptance and I thought maybe that was the beacon of hope we needed but that turned out to be bupkis so I am confident this is the one.)

Just wanted to wish everybody and anybody a Happy Easter!

I've enjoyed this community of fellowship, inspiration, insight, and companionship on this journey. May the renewal of this season bring positive paths for all, wherever they may lead.

All the best.

From NY. We ran into a similar situation. We have heard positive news from one academy and awaiting news from navy.
My DS also got an appointment from his other top academy choice back in January. I am super proud about that but it seems to be making the Navy wait seem to go that much slower!

You all are awesome and inspire me and crack me up daily and keep me going!!:) Thank you all so so much!! My DS is still waiting and hoping! I had a good idea for today…anything to keep my mind going positive! Try thinking of and then playing Navy songs in all genres! I’m having fun with it!!! Good luck to all!!:)

Freshly back from our spring break cruise to the Bahamas, slightly sunburned, very relaxed, and still CPR 😜. Know nothing more about a waiver or NROTC so…. Back to waiting and speculating with the best of ya! Trying to catch up on various threads during the long drive home up the east coast. DS did his best to gain a few needed pounds with that good Disney food. Oh to be 17 again…

The only thing I’ll add to this @Navyfly73 is you *shouldn’t be able to tell. And usually can’t, but there will always be the select few who think it means something. DH makes it his mission to surprise coworkers if they ever find out where he went to school. For DS and our family, USNA is not a matter of better commissioning source, better naval officer, better anything. It’s just school pride, the same as Georgia fans, Auburn Alabama fans or *gasp* those Notre Dame fans out there 😜. More than football, more than tradition. Fortunately he’s super excited about the Corps at VT too so while USNA remains his first choice and it would be nice to keep my wardrobe centered on blue & gold, I’m happy and he’s happy to make room for some maroon and we’ll still frequent Annapolis no matter what!

Our DS’s DoDMERB portal changed to “awaiting receipt of remedial” this morning and now it has gone back to “under waiver review” 😩
