USNA Class of 2029 Waiting, Speculating, Hoping

This is a great example of the real goal being in what service do you want to be, and reverse engineering the available paths, and looking past the 4-year way station of the SA.

He will report to USNA more mature, with professional knowledge and skills, been away from home a year and handled that, ready to deal with new challenges. Motivated. Understands what it is to coach himself through an obstacle and overcome it. Good all around.

BZ! (He will understand that.)
He actually told me a few months into college (after NROTC NSI camp and his college unit's Midshipmen orientation) that he was glad he did not get in last cycle because he realized that he was not mature enough to handle the demands of the Navy on top of being away from home. He is mentally and physically tough but was still only an 18 years old kid. He would have handled it fine but after this year he absolutely understands what is required of him academically and mentally/physically. "His skin is thicker" as his Gunnery Sergeant would say. There is definitely something to the benefits of that extra year.

HE DID IT!!!! Last night DS calls from college and tells us he got a call from his MOC that he has been accepted! :jump1:
So proud of his determination and growth since his last cycle turn down. After all of the emotions for the past two years, we can finally relax and enjoy the moment. Although, my parting words were: Do not get hurt! 🥰 I want to thank each and every one of you for all of your guidance and support through both cycles and his turn down. Those in this group are mentioned in loads of dinner conversations. Thank you all! ❤️
Seems like it’s “Almost Heaven” in West Virginia. Congrats to your DS and proud family. Advise your son to enjoy and finish the school year strong. He and your family will be in Tecumseh Court before you know it. "USNA 2029" has a nice ring to it.

@OldRetSWO FYI, Regional Admissions said they only go out upon acceptance
I've seen them sent out to people who decline so I'm not sure that we're talking about the same thing. For instance, some people refer to
an appointment as an acceptance (by the Service Academy) just as they do for other schools. .

Regional Admissions said they only send out a packet after the appointment is accepted - not after an appointment is received.

The BFE goes out once offered appointment regardless of whether or not you accept/decline the offer. We have received our BFEs from USNA, USMA and USAFA when no decisions were made in portal.
I'm simply responding what USNA Regional Admissions said. It's been 6 weeks since appointment offer and no packet. Maybe different regions do it differently.

DS submitted his app on Sept 1, then got DQ'd on 10/18/24. Admissions told him a waiver has not been considered at this point and he has received zero correspondence from USNA (not even marketing info) I'm curious if USNA ever denies an applicant prior to late May or June? The wait is taking a toll on him. A denial, however heartbreaking, might be easier now than later.

My DS was waitlisted last year mid-April and then turned down June 2. It was a long, hard wait and, yes, heartbreaking. But he has had a semester of college (in his second semester now), has matured and grown. We are waiting again for a response from USNA. I'm proud of the growth I've seen in him and feel he is better prepared for an acceptance if it comes. Wishing the best for your son.

I'm happy to see the first college reapplicant added to the list of appointments. Our DS is a college reapplicant and as stated above, waitlisted until June 2 last year. Praying this is a good start and after a semester of pre-engineering courses at the university, he'll look good to USNA!!!!

Thoughts on reapplicants waitlisted so long previous year? Is this favorable for them?

Best of luck on getting an appointment very soon !

They could take a bunch from the waitlist, or they could take none. It all depends on how many offers are accepted to meet their goal of +/- 1200 kids. They make more offers than they expect to accept. During my kid's year ('26), they grabbed quite a few off of the list. We even had a whole separate thread on it tracking people.

It is key for newer people here to know, parents or applicants, that being on the waitlist is no guarantee. It is not a first in, first out thing. Some are waitlisted awaiting medical clearance. Some might be waiting for some other last minute approval from something. You never know. Most importantly, the Academy has to fit the right candidate into the right appointment slot available. Example - a kid from MD District 3 drops their appointment. The Academy then has to see if there is someone they put on the waitlist that is from there to fill the slot. OR .... they have another kid from the district who was appointed using another nom source, and they have a kid on the waitlist who has that one as well. They might move the kid to the District 3 spot and move the other kid off the waitlist on the other source.

It is a big puzzle that Noms and Appointments has to balance and move around before the kids show up on I-Day.

He's not on the waitlist this year, that was last year and was dropped June 2. I didn't know if having been on the waitlist (no medical waivers) increased his chances this year.

DS secured 2 senate noms to USAFA, 1 senate and 1 ROTC nom to USNA, and 1 senate nom to USMA. Congressional noms could hit portals today. All applications complete. As far as we know he is 3Q with no LOA. Not a military family (yet). Brand new to all this and no idea what any of it means for his chances. It’s such a puzzle!

A good situation to be in.

USNA typically does not inform candidates if they are 3Q.

Medical: DoDMERB Q or waiver, clearly seen
Physical fitness: CFA, passed, clearly seen
Academic/Scholastic: Everything else that is scored per USNA whole person algorithm, not solely grade and test scores. Unknown, as an LOA that usually means they are good on that qual. But - the majority of midshipmen and cadets never received an LOA.

Happy waiting!

Dodmerb and CFA clearly passed for all 3. Application is extremely strong academically and whole person. Attended all 3 SA summer programs plus Coast Guard just for good measure. 😆

Hypothetically, if any of the MOC noms happened to be “principal” would that mean it’s coming and he just has to wait for it?

My DS is a reapplicant and in NROTC. Curious if the ROTC nom is showing in your DS USNA portal or if he just knows his unit nominated him? I don’t know if ROTC nom shows in USNA portal for everyone who receives an ROTC nomination form and letter of recommendation or only those chosen by USNA?
