Today was sponsor family meet & greet for plebes. Final plebe summer phone call immediately followed & DD reported she was one of 4 in her company that no sponsor came to meet. I assume all plebes who ask for a sponsor are assigned to someone.... Can anyone tell me how they connect if sponsors aren’t there that day? Does someone keep track of which plebes are unclaimed? Reassign if needed? Thanks!

Sponsors who can’t make it to the social often leave word with the sponsor coordinator, and it gets passed to the plebe. Or, the sponsors will get the contact info and contact the plebe once PS is over and the plebes have email and phones. Or, sadly, it could be a ghosting situation, though that is the least likely.

Once the ac year starts, though your DD will be busy, she can stop by the sponsor office to let them know or email them. See contact info for Rose and her team here:
    https://www.theladders.com/

Sponsors have to check in at the start of the sponsor social, and their presence/absence gets marked on the master list. So, Rose and her team will know which sponsors were there, which not.

Occasionally, we have missed a sponsor social due to travel. We called the sponsor office in advance and asked them to let the plebe know. More often, we usually had an upper class “sponsor son/daughter” in the detailer group, and passed them a note to get to the plebe.

She should sit tight until she’s finished PS and settled in her ac year room. If no word, she can let the sponsor folks know.

Just want to Thank you so much all those that do sponsor our plebe and most well beyond the 1 year commitment-
we are from FL and my plebe will likely not get home as often as I would like. He was assigned a great family-a 93 grad and wife , family of 4 boys- 1 boy a youngster- - the wife was gracious to call me and touch base and reassure me that my plebe is well-and they look forward to having him.

I looked at the website and did a Bing search and still have a question.

Is there a max mileage from Annapolis from which sponsors may live?

I'm interested in exploring this further. I live about two hours from the Yard in Northern Virginia.

Is that too far to be considered in the boundary? Thanks

I know most plebes can only have yard or town liberty- town liberty is a 35 mile radius of the yard

Besides silly things like regulations, there is the practical issue of logistics ... the best sponsors are local, giving the Midshipmen a place to hang out, relax and decompress a little. I know a lot of sponsors help out with little things like taking Midshipmen to the airport. These things are hard to do when you are two hours away. Its too bad, as I suspect you would be a great sponsor..

My wife wants to buy a house there, so we can sponsor Plebes.

She really isn't serious, but I can guarantee you that if we won the lottery, that's what we would do, and I would have zero say in the matter.

...and the house would have 10 bedrooms with a smaller version of King Hall, where three squares per day would be served.
We would have a mini-bus for ground transportation and a Cessna Citation, in case we needed to fly one home for a family emergency.

    Oh, you think I'm kidding.

Yeah and that two hours is with perfect traffic. My wife is a great cook and host. The Mid would probably show back up to the Yard a little chubby and with as many Christmas and birthday gifts as they could carry.

Thanks as always for your good info. I’m glad to know there is a process. Thanks to Rose & company for organizing and to the Annapolis community for sponsoring our Mids.

I have known mids with sponsors in Fairfax. I believe many of them were family relationships, like parents, Aunt & Uncle, older brother, etc.

It may be important to remember that for midshipmen, especially plebes, that time on Liberty is very limited. For a 4/C that only has 12 hours of liberty on a Saturday, s/he may not want to spend four of those hours in a car in transit. As you get older, and get longer weekends, this becomes less of a big deal.
