Hello all, I am currently a rising sophomore and I applied for the USNA summer STEM. I live in the Midwest and in an underrepresented area. I don’t have very many opportunities for STEM as I go to a small school. I have always dreamed of attending USNA, and I thought this would be a great opportunity. I currently have a 4.0 GPA and I am ranked 1/41 in my class. I participate in many activities including junior NHS, state student council representative, a job, basketball, and I’m an orchestra member along with 3 other STEM related clubs. I applied sort of late, March 24th, and I am concerned that I haven’t heard anything. Does this mean that most acceptances have been sent out already or am I still in the running until April 15th? Please let me know if you have been accepted/denied, I’m relatively new to these applications and am curious. Thank you and good luck to all who are still waiting for word from USNA!

There's been a series of posts about this/NASS recently. The answer is ultimately until you hear either way, you're in the running. It's not too early to start planning backup plans though :)

I'm right here with you (except one year ahead). In the meantime, what instrument do you play? I'm a dedicated violinist 😎. Keep the faith, until you hear from them, you don't know what they'll say!

P.S. Summer STEM is mostly designed to serve students who might not have had access to STEM opportunities as much. That might be you, but either way it means that no matter what, this admissions decision should not influence your motivation to apply for stem next year/NASS/usna '29

Thank you for the reassurance. Best of luck to you in the following days!! I am also a dedicated violinist. Best instrument 100%!

Hello! I also do basketball and I'm a dedicated violinist in orchestra along with a lot of STEM activities like you lol. I'm a rising Junior and I applied to the the STEM program last minute in March and got accepted 2 weeks later. I didn't think I would get it because I applied late and didn't have any test scores to submit; so it was a little nice surprise when I received the acceptance email and I'm excited to head off to Annapolis this summer and visit my first academy.
The USNA STEM program is technically an outreach program targeted to high-achieving and STEM-focused students who don't have a large amount of STEM resources and opportunities available due to where they live geographically and go to school. Therefore, you might receive the acceptance email earlier if you are a "target demographic". It is also a rolling admissions process, so the later you wait, the more competitive it gets. But don't be discouraged because the program isn't an indicator if you're going to be accepted into the academy when you apply.
Anyways, you seem to be a very competitive applicant (and you've stated you lived in an underrepresented area) so you might still have a good chance, and you are still in the running so don't lose hope. With that, I hope you get into the rising sophomores session! Best of luck and have a great day. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Congrats on getting into the camp! This really gives me more hope because you mentioned that you didn’t have any test scores to submit. In my school, you are not allowed to take the PSAT until you are a sophomore, and the ACT/ACT when you are a junior. I only submitted my application about 2 and a half weeks ago, so hopefully they are looking at my application. I’m glad I applied because you can’t get in if you don’t. I won’t be discouraged however if I do get denied, I’ll try again next year! I’ll keep you updated on my status!

If you are not selected this time, if you apply again mention in your application that your school is rural and has limited STEM opportunities. That is what admissions told our son after his stem turn down.
He attended the following year.
Either way remember it isn’t an indicator of chance for admission to the academy itself at all.

Your school does not control when you can take the tests. You can just go online to the SAT and/or ACT and schedule the tests when YOU want to. The PSAT is only once per year so that one is harder but the others are several times per year and you can take them at just about any place it is offered, not just your school. It is not uncommon for students who are aspiring top Service Academies to start taking them as sophomores or even as a Freshman to set a baseline and begin the refinement/improvement process.

Thank you! And just look out for any USNA titled emails in your inbox and junk mail and you will know your status very very soon. I opened the email during my English class and couldn't stop smiling for the remainder of the period lol. If you don't get in this year, you still have next year and USNA SS during the summer of Junior year. And like @Heatherg21 mentioned, state in your application that you school has limited STEM opportunities because you live in a rural area, if you apply again next year. This will definitely be an advantage. Best of luck!

Oh, I did not realize this. I talked to my counselor about starting to take these sorts of tests and she said wait until next year. I’ll look into it over the summer! Thanks for your input, it is very useful and I will look into it.

Something to consider is that MANY School Counselors are very experienced at getting the average High School kid into the Average State College but are much less well versed in helping kids get into the Service Academies.

Again for emphasis: Your Counselor does not have to have anything to do with this, it is between you and your parents.

Hi, I applied for the summer STEM in Jan and never got any email after the application confirmation email from admissions. But recently figured that all the other emails from USNA is going to junk mail folder and it only keeps 10 days in junk, rest gets deleted. I'm now worried what if the response to the application ended up in junk mail folder and hence missed it. The confirmation email says they will let us know by 4/15 but reading here that some applicants got the response with in 2 weeks of applying, i started worrying. Any help/advice is appreciated. Tyvm.

The best thing to do is contact summerstem@usna.edu and confirm your application. It usually takes them 1-2 days to respond, and if you don't get accepted, don't feel discouraged because it won't determine your chances of getting into the academy when you apply and it's an outreach program meaning they usually target students in underrepresented geographical areas. Don't stress out too much and you will know your official status by April 15th, and apply to USNA SS and boys/girls state Junior year. Don't lose hope and I hope to see you there!

Since STEM is rolling admissions, the later you wait, the more competitive and difficult it gets to obtain a slot. This doesn't mean you won't get in, it just gets progressively harder. I was accepted around March 16th, but I also applied the day after the application opened. You're always in the running until they tell you otherwise! Stick it out for these next few days!

(Also, like many have said, STEM is an outreach program. It has no effect on your real application other than showing you're fully interested in the Naval Academy, and considering the admissions office will be able to see everything you've applied for at USNA, getting denied still shows USNA that you're committed to becoming a Midshipman. Boys State and NASS will have much more of an impact application-wise!)

Did you get accepted for the rising Juniors?

Well, just an update for everyone. I have been reading up on other forums posted from previous years and it seems a lot of denial letter are sent out the day before all applicant’s know their status. Of course, this may definitely not be true for this year and it may have not been a pattern for the previous years. I still don’t have any word yet, but after reading those posts I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t get an email tomorrow and instead get one of the 15th!
