Vacancy unavailable, but trying to get one?

I just got an email from someone working for my congresswoman, and he said as of right now there is no vacancy for our district, so our congresswoman won’t be able to nominate anyone. However, he then goes on to say that they are trying to get a vacancy with West Point… does anyone have any idea what this could mean? I know that any HOR and senator only has 5 available slots per academy per year. Is someone from my district staying back a year or something?

If a candidate they nominated drops that leaves a vacancy.
If redistricting happens that can affect the allotment.
In our case, a Senator resigned, one was appointed to replace them and had two slates for our state that cycle.

Many variables here. I don’t understand the verbiage “vacancy for West Point”. Make sure you apply to all nomination sources. VP, Presidential (if qualified), NROTC if qualified.

This is inaccurate. Each MOC can have up to 5 charged slots at each Academy overall, not per year. So generally they will have one charged vacancy per year, with an additional slot every fourth year (on average). If someone drops from an Academy, their vacant spot can then be nominated the following year. Each MOC can nominate a slate of up to 10 candidates per vacancy, but only one can be charged to that MOC.

Normally MOCs will try to keep an open nomination for each year so they don’t end up in the situation that you describe above where they do not have a spot available.

Right, sorry. Bad wording

I mean West Point does not have a vacancy for my congresswoman. I don’t think there was any redistricting, all the email said was there is no longer a vacancy. But, I’m wondering what maybe could’ve happened if there was a vacancy before but not now.

You also have two US Senators...they can nominate.

West Point did roll back a few Cadets involved in an academic issue last year. Maybe the slot that should be open this year was affected? I dont know if those situations cause hiccups with MOC slots, or if the academies shift the charge to more obscure ones to prevent this?

Is this affecting your decision to apply or not? It should not. As stated, you have senatorial noms you can apply for. And there are also the ones that the SA’s control.

Unless your congresswoman tells you exactly the reasoning, it would only be a guess, here. Yes it can happen that they don’t have a spot available that can be charged to them. Doesn’t mean you cannot be appointed.

Keep forging forward, and apply for all nominations you qualify for! Good luck!!

I never said my decision to apply was affected, nor said anything about my hopes being gone because now I have no nomination sources. I know I have my senators, I was simply looking for guesses. Thanks justme.
